New DJ asking for help

Hey, the name's Tyler or DJ Kakase hah
I just joined this forums and I've just recently started to get interested in making EDM.
I'm fascinated by DnB as well as Psytrance
I have Fruity Loops Studio 7.0 and I was just wondering where I should start out. I've made a few... poorly made songs, and was just wondering what I need to do for practice, if I need to set objectives or what.

In before the people with flamethrowers:D Well, you need to listen to the music you wanna make and think about how to get those sort of sounds.
You'll need a midi keyboard too, don't try without one, a casio will work for now.
also, read articles in magazines etc. and go back through the forum looking up on google any terms you don't understand. Wikipedia and google are your friends.
Finally, you need to ignore all the people who'll rip into because your new to production. |

Is it not possible to be both? Or did you not consider the fact that he might already DJ, hence 'DJ Kakase', and might just want to get into production too? |

I have mention this before many times, but it has worked for me verry good. Take one of you today favorite tracks. Open a new project in your DAW, put this tracks in one of the Audio channels, oh and make shure it be a wav file and not mp3, cus mp3 can tend to sound a bit different than the original sound :P.. Anyway have this track as a "template" during your production.. Strart with the kick, bass and percs and listen to them verry carefully and try to focus on each different sound in the track, volume, freq. range, fx etc etc... Analyze the track with your ears and have a freq. analyzer on the master output... I think this is a greate way to practice on understanding how your gear sounds, Monitor, headphones etc etc.. Its importand to "get to know them".. Its good idea if you have a really good pair of headphones like the AKG 701 or Byerdynamics DT 990 Pro is some i woulld suggest... Then start with one sound like the Kick, and then percs. Take one sound at a time and try to recreate them.. Maybe its sounds to hard or boaring, well then you shouldnt start producing eather... Then when creating the sounds and "analyzing" the track i would use the headphones for this to get a more detailed sound image.. then do the final mix down on the monitors (this is how i do it and it has worked for me, so this is just a tip.. So if someone flames me here i will eat you alive ;) )
One last thing, dont post a question like how do i create this bass, this lead, this perc etc etc..! Cus soon you will be flamed, atleast in this forum... Try, and try hard to make the sound your self.. Then if you dont get it..TRY HARDER.. :D .. ! If you where to post a question.. Make it good one... Not something like How do i create a psytrance bassline? = Prepare to be eaten alive... Nah just kiddng ;) but i hope you undertsand what i mean..

Ah thanks man =] That sounds like a really good idea, not boring at all. I'll give it a shot and see how it turns out.
I've actually been playing with some VSTs in Floops and I'm starting to learn how to create certain sounds =] |

Yeah, I dont read this forum much, but there seems to be a lot of that in here. Almost every thread in this production section has someone flaming someone else, seemingly for no other reason than flaming someone just for the sake of it, just like david.michael's post in this thread. |

READ articles in magazines? gimme a break, thats just useless info, commercials and news in those.
WHY do u need to learn terms to produce music? Just turn the knobs and read the knobs names and u understand it much better.
And finaly, WHY would u ignore all the people commenting your music as this is the best way to find out if ur any good?
OMG im sorry to be an arse but a new producer should NOT follow your tips. Just play with the FruityLoops and have fun in the start. Dont push yourself to hard just try to make some fun sounds etc. And start asking things here after a while when u know abit more.
You could also read the stickies for a easy introduction.

Well, I think I should reply to this...
I understand your argument for not copying music, but where did I say to copy, I just said listen and try and emulate those sounds to learn what the knobs on your keyboard do. Its just for practise really, just randomly twisting knobs with no idea of what they do and in the vain hope that you'll come across something worth recording is a stupid way to work. Even if you have a sound in your head first and try to emulate that on a synth that's better. But the idea of paying close attention to tracks you like is to try and get you to pay attention to individual elements of the mix, which is something your average listener never does, they cant tell the difference between a guitar and a piano half the time:wtf: Paying attention to individual elements and listening for that sort of thing is part of making the transition from being a listener to a producer.
I didn't say it had to be casio, I just meant that it doesn't matter if the midi keyboard is crap, as long as you have one. If you believe you don't need a keyboard chances are your music is crap. Sorry, but if you want any sort of melody/harmony or even very interesting beats, a keyboard is pretty necessary.
You should read magazine articles and websites etc because they are a good thing for beginners to learn from. They may be nothing you and I don't know, but to a beginner they have stuff they've never heard of before.
You need to learn terms to produce music so that when you come on here to ask questions you can understand what people are telling you to do, are you saying that a new producer shouldn't have any idea of what the release knob does on their synth?:wtf:
And finally, your comments on others opinions are sickening. Music should come from your soul not from what others tell you it should sound like. Further up you said that you shouldn't copy, but how is it original to just take what other's say and use that. Hypocrisy.
If twiddling knobs randomly and then going to your mates and asking them if it sounds good works for you, then go for it, personally I think its stupid. |
