The name change is a prime example of desperate marketing. I've partied at Eleven50 since early 2002 and to me, it will always be, Eleven50. The only reason you would ever change the name of an established, and succesful venue is to alter your marketing stragety to a new crowd. I completly support new renovations in layout and sound design, but honestly, the name Opera, is terribly un-inviting for EDM. Eleven50 is a legend in Atlanta. Few clubs other than Backstreet, The Riviera, and MJQ have reached that level of success and sustainabiltiy. My only hope is that the "current" club owners/investors aren't aiming to market to the Midtown crowd, as Compound did, ultimately sealing their fate as a wash of a venue for any serious EDM fan.
Whatever the purpose is, I hope that Eleven50 is able to sustain itself as the primary venue for major EDM acts. I have too many memories in that club to pass off the purpose to a hollow and empty commercial venue, seeking to gain a buck by representing itself as a whore to hip/hop and Top 40 dance a.k.a, Star 94 or 95.5, the beat. I only saw Mike B grace the Eleven50 stage once, and it was the most horrific opening set I've yet to hear in the A.T.L. :(

There's been some insinuating by Liquified which points to the very thing you fear. They've seemed to allude to doing most of their shows at WETbar with a few side jaunts at other clubs like 1150. I really did like 1150 despite the system sucking, but WETbar is fairly promising. It has sort of the same feel to it, just a better sound system (have yet to hear the new one at 1150) and a more interesting dance floor (again, have yet to see the new 1150). Sure, it might be gay-oriented, but the club itself was nice and the atmosphere wasn't too shabby.
As long as the talent's there and the venue is at least alright, then I'll go to wherever they put the shows. I liked my memories at 1150 though, especially the PvD show in November of 2005. Yikes was that one a belter of a show. |

| I have talked to some of the managers of Opera at the gym, and they sort of incenuated the same thing, that they are catering to a more "diverse" crowd....Why don't they just cut to the chase and say they are going to be playing alot of hip-hop and top 40. It's all greed. The masses like that music, so they figure they can make more money with that music. What I was told is that they are going to give Liquified 2 weekend nights per month (so basically 2/8 of weekend nights or 1/4 of the business will be EDM), and then they can have it if they want to bring someone during the week. |

Agreed. Wetbar is a fabulous venue. I've enjoyed it since it was Blu, back in 2002. I've never had a bad night in that club. I think the transition it made from Blu to Wetbar was nicely done, and they stayed true to their audience, although the circuit parties moved to Jungle (which definately isn't a negative, considering the music at wetbar continued to stay strong on saturday nights).
Still, all in all, I hope Wetbar holds steady and continues to host Liquified nights. The gay crowd really deserves some exposure to other genres. In the end, gays only wanna dance, so this fusion of cultures will probably prove to be a real utopian experiment.... Possibly some flahsbackage to the incredible Backstreet days where all cultures met equally on the dance floor and shared some of the most wonderful club moments I've had the fortune to witness :disbelief |

Long live Backstreet.
It was the first dance club I visited in my life and pretty much made me the fan I am today of EDM.
My friend and I would give Rob Reum new tracks to play every weekend for a while. The times spent there with friends will never be forgotten and as A1C said, all cultures, gay, straight, black, white, asian, etc, met equally on the dance floor and shared some amazing times.
WETbar will never reach the heights of Backstreet, nor will any other club in Atlanta but I will say that the two times I've been to WETbar, I've had a blast. Good crowd, great sound and just an all-around good vibe.
Yes, I'm interested to see if Opera will be as nice as I've been hearing and also what is to come of its future but honestly, this town doesn't need another f'n Compound. |

I heard Fever is a lot like Compound, and if that's the case, then we've already got two :/ Opera would make three.
Weeeeak.
It's with skeptical anticipation that I await this show. Pardon my young-assedness, but what was Backstreet (other than the obvious)? |

Backstreet was a dance club that catered to the gay crowd, but was frequented by a large variety of patrons... you saw EVERYONE in that place... it was a total melting pot for culture.
The best times were had in the after hours portion... it was THE after hours club for the city of Atlanta, before legislation was passed that hindered it's functioning in that capacity, and eventually led to it's closing, after 26 years of operation.
In that 26 years, it's mission statement never changed. It's name never changed. It's dance floor never changed. They created an underground culture that lasted it's entire existance.
It was a place where people came together to dance.. experiment sexually... experiment with drugs. It really was a place where you could hear incredible house music and just be yourself, without the fear of being judged... It was Atlanta's greatest dance club and a club of the likes will probably never be seen in that town again... :(

a couple weekend nights at Opera along with the possibility of a weekly Saturday @ WETbar makes for TONS of great music at different venues every week! |
