Hey Guys, I'm just getting into the dj'ing aspect of things, and i was just wondering, What do i have to do to be able to mix live for lets say my friends over the internet, while using a program such as Traktor Dj studio or ableton?

Any suggestions would be great.

Shoutcast I think

you can set up a shoutcast or icecast server to broadcast live but if you dont have a dedicated web server there are a lot of logistical problems with people. alternatively you can use JACK in combination with tubePlug and router your ableton/interface output(s) through jack and into tubePlug where your friends can directly connect to you.

there's a few options:

1) windows media encoder - i think it was version 7 i was told was the easiest to configure for it

2) shoutcast - u can even download the shoutcast server plugin and shoutcast dsp plugin for windows and host ur streams direct from ur pc or u can find a server with shoutcast installed

3) icecast - dont know much about this program at all, not sure if it's an extension of shoutcast or a totally different program all together!

personally i used to use shoutcast server and shoutcast dsp plugin and set it up to host direct from my comp which shouldnt be a problem if u have a good connection (speed wise) - then i just used DynDNS to mask my ip address to wotever i wanted, ie: http://dj-spoonz.ath.cx

if u need any help give me a shout if u choose that way as it's the only way i can remember how to do - although i think WME 7 was pretty simple to configure too - mostly common sense

I personally use Broadwave. It's a simple and free program allowing you to stream whatever you want from your pc.
It allows you to stream your mixes from 20kbs to 256kpbs.

However, it does require a fixed IP and preferably a DNS Server.
you should try this site : http://freedns.afraid.org/. It will help you get an adress ie : jfk.afraid.org .

Then, simply launch the broadcast program (in my case broadwave), set ip up (broadcast adress, quality, ...), and you should get a broadcast adress like that : http://jfk.afraid.org/broadwave.m3u

it might look a bit scary or complicated but trust me it is not.
PM me if you want further info and questions.

(PS: with the Broadwave software, you can actually broadcast for free 24/7)

as long as ur comp is on 24/7? which is exactly the same as using shoutcast and probly any other streaming software, all of the good ones are free from wot i have seen and the paid ones dont offer anything/much extra... personally i would say shoutcast is the best option, given the fact the user doesnt need to have shoutcast to listen to the streams. u can listen on wmp, itunes, realplayer, quicktime too

thank you for all the suggestions, so i set up the shoutcast server and the dsp plugin, but now my log file sends me a "nak error" and then a second message saying it cant reach my computer/station.

Now i went through the winamp forums and i made my ip address static and also made sure that my router forwarded my port 8000 to 8001, and i still get this error. :( Any suggestions folks?
DJ Sound
hey Spawnmater you helped me out before with Nicecast for Mac and it is working great....

I got AOL but couldnt find ya online...here is my problem (copied over from another forum)

"""hey can you guys recommend some servers to use with Nicecast for live streaming? When using my mac as the server i can only broadcast to 8 people...thanks""""
SPAWNmaster
Hi DJ Sound, i'm currently on the road in Asia so I'm hard to reach these days except by email or PM (although if your up late you might see me on aim).

To answer your question, the reason you can only broadcast to 8 or so people has to do with the your bandwidth. You must find a happy medium between the quality of your broadcast (sample rate and stream speed) and how much bandwidth your ISP offers you since your broadcasting from your computer.

Look for a web host that lets you install an icecast server and you can router your broadcast through there. Alternatively you can set up your own web server but you would need to make special arrangements with your ISP for a fat pipe for that server to sit on.

PM if you have any more questions.

cheers

yea i tried everything, that was said on that website, and all the other forums for winamp and shoutcast.

The only thing that i can think of doing now, is to try another port and forward that port EX: 1024. You guys think that will solve the problem?
Spoonz
have u set ur firewall to allow tcp packets on the ports u are forwarding? if u have then u may as well try doing it on the other port u said
