Projectors? yay or nay (pg. 2)

I have both a TV & a projector.
The projector IMO is not for general use. It not for normal TV show viewing, it is more for movies or Xbox gaming. The projector will have a lamp life of about 2000 hours, and also you will have to always watch the projector in the dark (depending on how strong the lumins is).
For the purpose of watching just movies I'd totally recommend it. Unfortunately the old LCD projectors are crap compared to the latest versions, so don't go too cheap. You need to check up on the Lumins, the contrast ratio, colour & resolution. IMO Lumins should be around 2000, Contrast no less than 600:1 & colour 24 bit (obviously the higher the better for all) |

If you're going to get a projecter, you're not going to get a decent one without spending over $1000 USD, before getting a DECENT screen, which is another $250+. Maintenance isn't a big deal, if you know what you're doing. Replacing the bulb is generally the only form of routine maintenance I'm aware of, aside from cleaning the optic lens regularly.
It's an excellent compact solution, which you can view anywhere in the house, with the right viewing area and screen. It sure beats spending extra money on a plasma/LCD TV of a comparable viewing size, then spending even more to have it properly mounted to a wall. |

Definitely true.
Anything worth doing is worth doing right.
And I'll insert a shameless plug about an underground place that's in Lubbock. My buddy that runs it just got a projector and has it hooked up to a mac for visuals that respond to the music. in' bad ass I tell you.
As for everyday viewing, another friend of mine got a projector and used it as his tv, and it was kinda lame. I'm pretty sure he just did it to say he had a projector. He had a crappy screen too but he also bought a cheap projector so the whole setup was janky.
I don't know about LCD and know little about plasma, but if you have the cash and the room get one of those.
SIDE THREADJACK QUESTION: Has anyone used a Wii on a projector or huge screen TV(plasma or lcd)??? And how were the results? |

cheap and projector should never be used in the same sentence.

2000:1 contrast, 1500 lumens
it can't do hd, but . i don't have any hddvds or anything that'll warrant getting anything that nice. it looks good, its quiet as , and i love it
i also have a wii, and it works amazingly with it, not a single problem to mention |

We got it pretty close to the full size -- took up nearly an entire wall. We put the projector up on a cabinet in the kitchen, and shot it through the kitchen into the living room. I'm kind of surprised at a lot of the comments warning against projectors in this thread -- we never had a single problem with it in terms of quality. We had it hooked up to a surround system, and everytime we had people over they were blown away - it really was like a personal movie theater. It had an HD cable, but we never used it - once we'd adjusted some settings the picture was quite alright. We also had it hooked up to a 360 - Gears of War was awesome on that thing. |
