SARS?

How can I live when these days I make a SARS joke and I only get perplexed and befuddled looks from blokes?

SARS, please come back.

REASSURANCES are being made that the outbreak of bird flu in North Wales currently has no implications for the people of Wrexham and Flintshire.

Two people are currently undergoing tests after being taken ill at the smallholding where a case of the disease was confirmed yesterday (May 24).

A 1km restriction zone remains in place around the site near Corwen, in Conwy.

The "low pathogenic" H7N2 strain of bird flu was found in dead chickens on the farm, which is different from the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain currently circulating in Asia

It is the first confirmed outbreak of bird flu in Wales.

Officials from Wrexham Council say they are "in close contact" with colleagues from Conwy and have been keeping "a careful watch on developments".

A spokesman said: "Currently there are no implications for anyone in the County Borough. However, if local poultry keepers have any concerns we recommend they visit the DEFRA website on www.defra.gov.uk, which gives clear and detailed information about avian flu."

Speaking at a press briefing at the National Assembly for Wales in Cardiff, Wales' chief vet, Doctor Christianne Glossop said that chickens had been dying at the smallholding at Ty'n Llwyn near Corwen, over the past two weeks.

Fifteen 22-week-old Rhode Island chickens were bought by the smallholding two weeks ago, bringing their total number of birds to 45 chickens and two geese.

But one of the birds died the day after they were taken to the site, and by May 17, 10 birds were dead, all from the new group of chickens.

The owners of the smallholding called their own veterinary surgeon, who then contacted the state veterinary service.

Dr Glossop said: "At that time there was no reason to suspect notifiable avian disease."

She said: "Wales and Great Britain contingency plans have been activated and in line with these the farm has been placed under restrictions."

"A one kilometre restriction zone has been placed around the affected premises, details of which will be posted on our website.

"Within the zone, birds and bird
products can't be moved. Bird gatherings may only take place under licence.

"We are not yet asking bird keepers within the zone to bring their birds indoors."

Dr Glossop said the 30 remaining birds on the farm would be and the source of the infection was being investigated.
She said: "We would like to remind poultry keepers throughout Wales to look for signs of notifiable disease in birds and report it in the usual way.
"As the jigsaw puzzle becomes clearer we may put restraints on holdings in other parts of Britain. We will be monitoring the situation on an ongoing basis."

Dr Glossop added: "We have no reason to believe the viral infection is spreading rapidly within this small population. This isn't another East Anglia situation at the moment."

She emphasised the need for proper biosecurity measures, adding: "I'd like to think people have learned from foot and mouth."

it's doing the rounds here now, 2nd "major" outbreak in an area but first to get humans infected here that i know of.
