The easy thing about hip hop is that mixes seen as "weak" in trance/house circles, such as a backspin, are far more acceptable.
Make good use of that.
$240 an hour, that's huge for a house party. Those guys are idiots for offering to pay that much. |
lol, I called the guy, Chris, about whether or not that was true or not because after your post i thought about it, and it just seemed more and more unrealistic.
Chris: Um, well the band we wanted to book wasn't really what everyone wanted but they were asking 1,750$. So, I kinda thought I was ripping you off.. Is 1200$ ok?
Me: Yea man, I guess it'll work...
And i was wrong about the time, It's going from 730pm - 3or4am (depends when everyone finally leaves)
This advice has really helped guys, I truly appreciate it!!
iTunes, Crossfade, Backspin, BPM match ups, "uuggnn and another one", matching up the last 4 beats... all to create "art" . |

I dj for house party's a lot... Just do short mixes and mix the music up with new stuff and older stuff. Play new stuff and then throw down Nelly - EI and your gold :)
Tips:
Know what the noticible part of the music is such as the bass line in Candy Shop by 50 cent. take out the bass of the outgoing song (or whatever) and then mix in that part of the new song. Give people a taste of the song to come.
Fraternity parties respond better to ACTUAL DJ's, not iTunes and playlists.
Good luck |

hip hop is different than trance
many times you wont find "club versions" (Just a kick in the beginning, no layers), so it will be hard to mix songs together due to choruses and verses being in the begining of the song. |
Loops.
Pray they have the CDJ-800's. Looping is really easy on those. It would help if you had some time to practice before hand too, so you can get the hang of mixing, as you have to be a lot quicker with it. |

Dude it's hip-hop. It's not like hip hop Dj's actually care about smooth transitions. Just fire up Windows Media player, turn on crossover and you're golden. |

yeah as mentioned listen for the snares... if you can seriously do yourself a favor and get instrumentals to mix in. example it should be
song 1 -> insturmental song 2 -> song 2 -> instrumental song 3, etc...
the songs nowadays vary from 69bpm-125bpm so try and get bpm ratings first too, to see what songs can mix into others.
you can also get the vinyl comps that have the 8 bar insturmental intro, those are perfect. its like on auto drive with those. but at this point you probably dont have time to figure it all out at once so the stop and go technique will have to do. drunk people listening can barely tell, and fraternaties like to throw money out the window. i DJ'ed this one time, free outa my generosity but they paid me $60 to play 1 more hour with 5 people sitting in the patio.
and yes, theres alot of hip hop djs that care about mixing. theres just not alot of them that really know what they are doing, on the local/house party level. |
