I'm sure where I live that was the case :p. |

There'd be an uproar if they banned homosexuals from anywhere. Weird. |
exactly.
If someone is straight, why would they go to a gay bar anyways? What kind of intimidation are gays facing in their own clubs and bars? This is just a publicity stunt by the bar operater in my opinion. |

In the BBC article they said that straight groups were coming in for "hen and stag parties" (which would be called Bachelor and Bachelorette parties in the States), and causing a lot of problems with the regular gay clientele.
I know a lot of straight people, especially women, who go to gay bars all the time. They usually are going to dance, but some have other reasons. And I know a lot of gay people that get offended by it. It is the nature of the beast.

nice to see a complete lack of discussion re renegade's post fellas. you can make your baseless assumptions "its the owner's promotional tool" if you prefer debating that to the real issue.
agree with renegade, i dont see the big deal. there are all kinds of exclusive clubs, sport gyms for women, rich list golf clubs, general clubs with guestlist only entry etc etc.
and of course it is enforceable. thats what bouncers are for. if they see a gaggle of hens then they can refuse them entry. we've already got exclusions for clubs to refuse people based on their gender, to maintain a 50-50 mix in the club/pub.
and lol at australia being "conservative". we're certainly less so than england's other colonies ;) |

Bassless assumptions? If me, a dude living in the US, is talking about this gay bar, it obviously has had some publicity. Whether it was planned publicity, I wouldn't know, I'm not management. |

Frankly I fail to see the problem here. Discrimination is certainly a problem when it's targetted against a specific minority, but not when it's used by a minority to seclude themselves from the majority. There is nothing wrong with gay-nights, college groups for Japanese students, Mensa, or discount bus fares for seniors, but there would be something wrong with everyone-except-gays nights, everyone-except-Japanese-student clubs, people-of-unexceptional-intelligence only clubs, or discount bus fares for everyone who isn't over the age of 65. See the difference? |
Well all it is just a door policy and a legal bit of paper which protects them from libel if someone starts getting their panties in a twist over being discriminated against.
(I'm surprised it's even newsworthy really, maybe someone should go drag Anna Nicole's corpse out for another beating just to check if she's still dead)
There's plenty of clubs and pubs that have door policies, I've been to alternative nightclubs where if you roll up in your brand name togs, they won't let you in, other places I can't get into unless I'm the exact opposite and have to wear something in the expensive designer bracket or whatever.
That's all over the world- Door Policy
Even if it's as simple as not letting someone in that's drunk, wearing sneakers, a hoodie, gang colours or whatever, because (yes as terrible as it may sound to some of you) private premises aren't a democracy and the only reason they do it, is to keep trouble out.
If you look like you're going to cause trouble, then the big hairy blokes on the door reserve the right to chuck you out or deny entry to avoid the patrons and regulars getting hassled. Doesn't matter if you think it's unfair, take it up with the 18st 7ft tall gorilla on the door :haha:

Interesting considering I thought Australia was pretty conservative.
|
Hardly, there is a Australian Liberal Party in charge. But they do have fairly conservative views in some areas which is making them unpopular (namely the involvement with Iraq and employment contracts) which will see them get turfed so bad at the next elections. Such is the fate it will seem of those who follow the US into dumb wars... :)
(Not that the Labor *yes that's how it's spelt* party is much better)
At the end, the only reason that it's news is someone stuck 'gay' in the headline and the curious other 96% of the population decides it's remotely interesting. |

 okay okay I get it I'm gay and so is the thread.
It's really annoying when straight people waltz into the gay bar with their entourage of breeders, looking around wildly at the "ironic" scenery where everything is "backwards" to them, expecting gays to be entertaining like circus performers, otherwise getting disgusted and completely mortified when some gay guy "hits on" them.
But I think there's more of a fair approach than just an outright (and discriminatory ban) against hetereosexuals. That's such an overgeneralization. What about all the fag-hag fat chicks that accompany their skinny insecure gay guy friend? And what about the "straight" guys that check out the gay bar for the first time secretly trying to find a venue to come out of the closet? What about the straight guys who are gay porn stars? What about gay for pay? What about TRANNYS?
Why doesn't the bar just hire a mean bodyguard and have a bunch of annoying tranny hookers lying around outside screaming "girl I need more lines." That should be enough to keep the breeders out without an outright discriminatory ban.
I can understand how much gay people go through, but I don't think it's fair to discriminate against the entire group of heterosexuals. Maybe if there were more details about this scenario I'd feel more understanding. Is Melbourne such an awful place that there's only ONE measly little gay place to go to and still that place is swamped by hetereos? |

Please name me one in LA. So far every one I go to plays top-40, hip-hop, or aged gay man over-sampled tribal house remix of black screaming diva. |
