Cheap/ Free Programs just to put instruments together?

To start out, I want to give a little intro of what I'm going to do (or attempt to do). I am wanting to combine Trance/other electronic music(mainly trance), rock, and hip hop for my music. I'm going to hopefully be starting in July, but I need to know what cheap/ free programs would you reccomend for just putting the different instruments together. Like, I would have some things from the korg synth, and then ontop of that either vocal percussion or drums, then I might have guitar, than vocals.

So I'm wondering what programs would you reccomend just to layer those ontop of eachother. I was thinking of using audacity, but if there is anything better than that for just layering tracks, it would be appreciated if you could tell me. Thanks!

edit: the actual recording for the songs will be done in a real recording studio. I just want a program to test out what it should sound like in it's "raw" form I guess you can say.

edit2: I'm just wanting what your personal reccomendations would be for this sort of thing. Audacity to me looked the best out of the choices I found. I really do not want to come across as being a "noob" or whatever you want to call it.
