Effects, EQ & Mastering

Hi @ll,
Another question...
I've been making electronic music for years now... But one aspect that I've only recently got into is FX, EQ-ing and Mastering...
These things are really able to take a track to a higher quality level. That's why I want to know what effects do you apply to which 'instruments' for example... Reverb to strings, etc...
The more detailed this is described the better...
And more importantly how do you Master a track? Do you apply settings to each seperate channel/instrument or rather to the whole track? And could you give some examples?
Currently I'm using Cakewalk SONAR... I've got lots of Plugins (Waves, etc...) but don't really know how to apply them the correct way...
Does anybody know how to get started? Some tutorial, website, advice?

usually all the instruments get a tiny little bit of reverb (except the kick, no reverb!), and depending on the sound, pads/strings get lots of reverb (and delay), leads get quite some reverb (and delay), and some basslines also deserve more reverb (usually no delay on bassline). The drums stay relatively dry, unless you don't use many drums at all (otherwise the drums drown in their own reverb/delay). Other (insert)effects can be applied to anything, experiment.
Mastering is called mastering because you don't apply it to the separate channels (that's mixing), but to the entire mix (the master). This usually consists of some compression and EQ, and sometimes an exciter/finalizer or something similar.
Be scarse with reverb...too much can drown your mix. |

my pieces of advice: use tons of reverb on Strings. little on leads. not much on other things. EQ: Use on the kick drum ONLY to pump up the bass.. then Eq the entire track at the end, boosting up the high end alittle. Compression: If you dont think your track is loud enough when it's done, thow down some compression, I recommend the Waves RCL compressor.
