Dj Blurr - Firebird (June 2007 Mix) Discs 1 & 2 (pg. 2)

Dj Blurr
Thanks for the honest feedback Jay.

Ya, theres always room to improve. Again, with the amount of music I listen to on a daily and weekly basis, turning out great mixes or even a good mix isnt easy. I dedicate myself to finding music for the masses, expecially tracks that people want to hear. I listen to the radio shows and gather promo mixes and tracks to use in my mixes, and often times, other djs locally give me stuff to listen to or try out. If I like it, ill use it in my mix, and hope the listener will enjoy it too.

I wont put something in my set if I dont truely enjoy the track myself. I know some djs actually put tracks they dont like in their sets, or mixes, even though they dont like the track.

I always like to hear peoples thoughts too on any mix I have completed. Since taking on a Dj persona, Ive had to rearrange the way I do things. expecially, breaking myself apart from the rave culture. a club dj and a rave dj are completely different. Which is why Im constantly also watching and attending events, to learn and see what the djs are doing nowadays, and to gain more techincal knowledge on what I need to do to accomplish my goal of having a great set.

Every Dj is gonna screw up once or twice. If any Dj ever approaches me and says they haven't its bull. I realize not every set is gonna be perfect, but I sure can try to. I dont care who you are, youve ed up someplace or another.

But ya, the more times Im at 1015, the more I need to practice to perfect my skills. Which means, primarly everyday if im not mixin, then im listenin to tracks.

And I'll be honest...I have always felt the sets I've heard from you in the past have been missing something. Missing the journey aspect or something as I would be waiting for the set to go somewhere and it really wouldn't, IMRHHO. But it could be a taste thing. I mean, come on...you like some vocal trance I think is cheesedog lol. So in some aspects of the music, we just have different tastes. Anyhow, while I wish theere could have been a more stylish buildup to the fast staff at the beginning, I liked it enough to probably put it in my playlist at work today...which means I'll prob hear it two or three more times lol.

But again, I enjoyed this one overall...but some of the vocals ... lol. I seriously have issues with some vocal trance lol...as I just feel a lot of times the producers makes the vocal track since they have a higher rate of commercial success no matter how terrible it is.

Two little nicks with the set, though, IMO...nothing BAD....so don't be afraid to read on, lol.

This just might be a preference more. I personally love it when the first track or two has some type of buildup to it. I think it realy helps deliver an experience to the listener!. Whether it's with the BPM, the banginess of the track, or just the style of the track. But again, this might be a thing with me. I just like emotional buildup in a set/mix. Even if it's just a track or two to do it. This goes for me in clubs too. I am one who has a a bit of difficulty coming in and just going nuts to a fast/hard set right off the bat right away. If I come in and it's already going hard/fast my mindset gets a little funky and I sit around waiting for the one track that really catches me and then I'm good. Just took me a couple tracks to get into the mix, but maybe it's because the first track is an example of what I think is cheesy vocal trace lol.

Lastly....and this is a problem I have too, and I think it's just more of not being experienced a whole ton....is that we tend to play most of a track. For me, mainly because it's obviously easier to do the transitions in the lead ins and lead outs. But sometimes you get the repetetive simple bang bang bag with quick build up, QUOOSH, and the main part of the next track has kicked in. Anyhow, just that it turns into 9-11 tracks per hour and while some tracks can hold up for 7-8 minutes a time, some tracks really feel to drag after about 4 1/2 - 5 minutes (this is in general, not with any particular mix). The more experienced DJs usualy fit in about 13 per hour -- thinking of peeps like Armin, A&B, SvD, etc! They are just damn good at transitions a good 12-16 bars sooner in a lot of tracks than where the lead-out begins. I'm trying to learn how to do it well...but it's tough dude! It's tough! One well known DJ (who can play trance) who does play most of the tracks as a whole is Markus...and it drives me nuts sometimes. You'll hear him have some amazing set and he'll get to a transition where the lead-out and lead-in between the tracks is so long it just kills the energy for like two minutes and then it has to be built up again. Have experienced the energy in crowds fall apart for minutes at a time waiting for some lonnnggggggggg ass transition he is doing to finish lol. With fast trance, it's easier to get away with it because since you still have a good fast beat going that keeps the crowd moving while the transition occurs.

Anyhow, at least you have tracks to make up a solid set. I have gotten a good number of tracks lately, but it ranges across such a large range BPM and styles that when I do create a set with the new tracks it's a bit all over the place. There is a huge date gap between the tracks I received have gotten and my older ones. $$$ has gone to the baby lol. Least I am getting the transitions down! And good tracks on their own! Challenge I'm facing now is getting enough tracks to be able to have good filling sets. Wish I had the money to buy enough tracks to fill in all the gaps I need right now. I think I could get away with a set in a club setting, but I'd personally have a problem with it and I know how I like to hear progression...or as Taj likes to say, telling a story in his set...and if I can't deliver that, while I may enjoy my own set I will not be genuinly pleased with it.

wow dude i couldn't have said it better myself!!!! that's exactly what these sets are lacking! i also like dramatic intro's with buildups and usually start off with some slower bpm tracks and increase the bpm toward the end of the set. i.e. start off at 130bpm and build up to the stronger harder tracks toward the end of the set.

as to the second point yo made dave you're absolutely correct. it feels like some tracks just drag on forever. i can usually fit about 14 tracks in a little over an hour (unless i get lazy). good mixing takes creativity, its all about phrase matching and finding the right mix points, knowing when to mix in and out. thats what makes a mix really exciting.

while this may be a good set blurr....i didnt really dig the high bpm tracks troughout a little too hard on my ears. this is one reason i really hate rave dj's and the hardcore genre. sets need to be varied with some nice breakdown's, in a club setting ppl usually need a break from dancing and breakdowns are important.

Sup Jim! It's been a blast here in Korea. I'll be back this weekend just in time for A&B. C u soon.

Blurr just one thing to add regarding your mixes. I like the fact that you always try to give what the majority of the clubbers want to hear when they are burning the dance floor.

As far as I'm concerned there are two major important elements a sucessful DJ have. One is the ability to read the crowd and not just follow his planned tracklist. Second is to develop his own style of music. It's a great challenge to balance the two. Most good DJs I know that never really taken their career to the next level because they have too much pride on sticking to their own style of music when the crowd their playing to is not really digging it.

With the passion you've been showing towards your new career, I have no doubt that you'll turn more heads and eventually make a name for yourself. It's just a matter of time.

Hi KrisSC2000. Still in the works. Id definitely like to do some type of Gig exchange and get some LA Djs up here to 1015 also, possibly make a couple recommendations to get them heard and stuff.

The July mix ill create will have a buildup starting from a slower BPM, Ill also be using the same method when mixing live again in July.

This time around, I have a lot of new stuff I wanna showcase, Of course I wanna showcase Trance, but will start off with stuff like what you guys heard in the Cirque lounge when I opened up for Thomas Datt.

I also experimented with 2 Tracks on Saturday when I opened for Thrillseekrs, one was a Remix of Filo & Peri's Anthem, which I combined with a new Electro remix rework of Iio's Rapture. Seems like thats what got the crowd moving more when I dropped those, so be expecting to hear some something similar.

Thanks D:Jay. Ya, as I said before, I dont ever really preset my mixes. I have tried that a few times, and it hasn't gotten the response I wanted. So what I usually do is find enough tracks that I think people want to hear, and bring it to the club for the gig. There is always someting someone might want to hear also, which is why I bring a terabyte worth of music incase someone wants to hear something.

Theres something I forgot to say too.. I like to encourage the crowd to ask for a request... If I have the track on hand, and its something I think someone wants to hear, Ill play it. Doesnt matter if its electro, progressive, trance, house.. lemme know.

With Wifi Capability in the club, I can download straight from Beatport, and use the new track right then and there.

One track I been working on is a rework of Sonicvibes remix of Right Here, Right now. If it comes out the way I want, I may showcase it in the July Mix..

No Freaking Way Bro! I totally missed out on that one. I've would have gone Ape  PvD Dropped Anthem here in Korea and I went totally nuts. Being the oldest guy in the crowd, peeps were stunned thinking "What the is this guy on tonite?" I think I even got PvD's attention because I was the only one in the crowd singing on top of my lungs with the vocals :D
