been laid up in bed sick this week, what better time to work on a new track on the lappytop (in between puking of course). tested out some new ideas on some things in Reason and some new ideas in general on how to make tracks, and out comes this little dirty acid house number...

Catapult

this is the same file that's up on my myspace page, with the intro and outro truncated a bit to fit the 10Mb limit myspace has (didn't want to drop it down to 128).

enjoy!

ps - simplicity at it's finest (for me anyway)... getting a somewhat big sound outta just 2x 303, 1x Subtractor, 1x NN-19 (crash samples), 2x Redrum, and 1,000,000x patch cords in Reason :D

Let's try this again... I was horrified at how it sounded on a CDR in my car stereo (mastering on Sony Silvers is a baaaaaaaad idea folks!). Had to dig out the AKG K240 reference cans to get the balance right (or better anyway).

Take 2:

I like it! If I may make a couple of suggestions - widen the bassline.. space-wise. And, maybe try a different sample for the crash.. and try tightening the kick a little... but that's something I have trouble with myself. :< I like the bitcrusher effect, maybe go a little easier on it - I mean, not at the end of every measure.

I'd LOVE to open up the main bassline a bit more, but that's the nature of the 303 with the rez cranked... it'll tear your head off if you don't tone down the highs on it. I used the bandpass filter in the SuperCamelPhat to limit it to 100hz to about 6k, otherwise I'd have to tone down some of the other parts.

I know what ya mean about the bitcrusher (the "Digital" setting in Reason's scream), it does get spaced out more after about 3 minutes in (at the end of every 32 bars versus 16 in the beginning). I'm using it in another track more conservatively, but in this one I think it adds to the dirty feel I was looking for.

One day I'll get around to finding some good refills for some other sounds (I just use the stock soundset and a XV-5080 refill), I just haven't found one worthwhile yet. It's also hard to tear me away from the classic 909 percussion sounds! :haha:

If we all could tighten up our kicks, we'd probably all have record deals... :D I spent a TON of time trying to get that to sound beefy and punchy, and that's the best I could come up with (and I have a large arsenal of VST compressor and distortion plugs).

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it (it'll definitely be used on the next track I'm working on already, especially toning down the bitcrusher! LOL)

honestly you could leave the bitcrusher in just as it is - its not extremely excessive - I was just making a suggestion, in terms of variation. Another thing for the bitcrusher - maybe once in a while have it happen differently, like mix another effect in with it. that would be cool. glad youre making music!

I'm still learning Reason 3 and the power of the Combinators. I set up a patch to use the Combinator knobs to tweak a couple things at once on the Scream and Vocoder (which is what filters some of the sounds). There's soooooo much that can be done now that it blows my mind, and that's one reason (pun unintended) why I've been on hiatus from writing for so long (at least a year).

I got a suggestion to tone down the highs on another board, and to do that would require an audio export with Rebith running thru Reason (can't patch Rebirth thru Reason when you're doing a mixdown in Cubase  ), so I will definitely be looking at doing some bitcrusher variations. :)

that suggestion just cost me $149 :whip:

need to upgrade my CamelPhat to 3.3 and get that CamelSpace... that's how long I've been outta the loop... now heading to Harmony-Central to see how many of my plugs are outdated :D
