Speakers?

Whats the difference between speakers and an amplifier and a hi-fi system. Would you guys recommend one over the other?

Does anyone have any speaker recommendations?

An amp powers passive (non-powered) speakers. They also make active (self-powered) speakers that don't need an amp but they're typically more expensive. An A/V receiver is another type of "amp" that does video too, like for a home theater.

I know hi-fi speakers are out there, but I'll have to defer to someone else to explain them... (higher clarity maybe?)

Yep, Hifi speakers really sound good, although they can cost as much as you are willing to spend. Very detailed with very accurate highs, mids, and lows.
You have to think about what you are going to use the speakers for, and how much you are willing to spend. If you are going to be using them for parties, you'll want some PA speakers. Passive or active speakers will work well for this. You'll want at least 200 watts of power (more the better!) If you plan to be spinning in your room, then look at some cheap monitors. Anything by Alesis is decent. Search around the forums for topics regarding monitors. You'll find plenty. In terms of hi-fi, check out Paradigm. Anything in the Studio line will work well. The Studio 60s sound very very good. Studio 20s, which I have more experience with, sound good too, but they lack the bass that the 60s are able to create. I've heard decent things about BW speakers as well, although in my listening tests they didn't compare to the Paradigms.

Next, consider how much you are willing to spend, then see what you can get for that price.

thanks so much...that really helps me out!

I am now looking primarily at Alesis speakers. They seems to be exceptionally priced for the quality that they give. Do any of you have any suggestions on the ones to get?

I was looking at:

1. Alesis M1 Active 520 $299 [Pair]
2. Alesis M1 Active 620 $399 [Pair]

what do you think?

620. That extra inch and a half of woofer diameter is going to help it drop into the lows a good deal more (lower f3, if anyone knows/cares what that is).

If you are really willing to put some effort into it, you could try building your own... I just built two of these for a bit less than 400:

They sound pretty nice too. I got the design from www.zaphaudio.com.

But otherwise, ya, the 620s.

Very nice... what amp are you using for them? And what are the tweeters&woofers model # you're using?

I can get the Alesis MK1 Active 520 very cheap, under 200 euro. Anyone got an opinion about it or some reviews? :D

I used two Dayton DA175 woofers, and one Seas 27TBFCG tweeter in each speaker. They turned out very nicely. Maybe I'll put some veneer on sooner or later. I'm using some kind of Sony receiver that came with a mini-system. Its okay, not very powerful though. I'm looking to buy a hi-fi amp sometime soon. That requires a good deal of money though...

Liquid Fusion
why are hi-fi systems so damn expensive...the one i looked at by pardigm is almost $2000
dark_Omens
They use very nice parts, and are researched extensively to give the best sound possible. A good deal of the hi-fi stuff is made in the US, Canada, or the UK also. Like they say, you get what you pay for!
