I felt that also for a second. Why wasn't Paulie one of the 3 they wanted to hit?

IMHO, they were only going after Tony's most loyal and trusted guys. I think they are just going after the leader and the righthand men. and I don't think Paulie is one anymore. With his mouth and odd quirks, it makes it tough for Tony to put that amount of faith in him. And Tony has contempled killing him just recently because of this. Paulie has proven that he is not loyal as he always does what's best for him rather than for the family as a whole. He ignored Tony's wishes with the beef he had with Christopher going all the way back since Paulie thought he killed the Russians a few years ago. The issue with the joke about Johhny Sak's wife is still lingering in Tony's head too as he has continually asked Paulie if he's the on who informed Johhny about the joke. I think they feel Paulie would do whatever is best for him if Tony, Sil and Bobby are gone- perhaps becoming part of the NY family...

Tony's dead...

in my opion...

just checked out the different Soprano forums...

here ya go:

With so many loyal Soprano viewers out there from over the years, not sure why you have been unable to pick up the clues: Tony was whacked. Network television would have shown it in gory detail; Chase assumes his audience is more astute, aware of details and intelligent enough to draw the right conclusion based on the web of information that has been developed over the years.

Tony and Bobby discussed in the first episode of this season how when you die, a) you do not see it coming and b) everything turns black.

The man at the bar was Nikki Leotardo, Phil's nephew, who was noticeably nervous as he sat at the bar, rattled his fingers and stared at Tony. We saw Nikki in a sit down earlier in the season, although Tony would not have recognized him. He is there to avenge the death of his uncle (his father, Phil's brother, died back in the late 1970s). Look at the credits.

The trucker was the brother of the man Chris shook-down for the DVD truck back in an earlier season, who wants revenge against the family and Tony.

The gang members were the same guys who tried to kill Tony in an earlier season but only clipped his ear.

Chase demonstrates to the viewer that the world around Tony will end and he is surrounded by those who want to kill him and everything he stands for.

His time is up, the best times are behind him, as AJ points out. Some may argue a gang hit would never happen in front of family -- however, Tony's crew whacked Phil in front of his wife and grandchildren, so tit for tat. And the movie never ends, it goes on and on and on and on. The world will go on, Tony's family will go on and although Tony tried to hold on to that feeling of invincibility, he is human and dies by the same sword he held.

Chase is a genius.

I totally agree however since we do not him being killed, it does potentially leave the door open for a movie. All I can say is, never say never. :-)

With that beign said, I read this on another Sopranos MB:

"MONDAY UPDATE: Lots of people are saying that the guy who disappeared into the men's room in the diner was credited as Nikki Leotardo, nephew of Phil, claiming the same actor appeared as Nikki before. But is that true? A Philadelphia newspaper article interviewed the Italian pizzeria owner who played that character, who says he was just dubbed "Mystery Man," and that he has NOT been on the show (or any show) before. Was Nikki another character in the diner? (Via Deadspin.)"

Any insight on this??? TIA
