Just wondering if we are all different colors does that mean we are a different race, but with a common ancestor?
Sunsnail
yes

Give me more than a one word response. Why do you believe in race?
Jackson
I'm too tired to look up the definition for the word Race.

But if we are talking physical attributes then we are all the same species with adaptations to the environments we live in. We have not evolved to such an extent where these adaptations have branched to form new species. And i don't think we ever will. With inter-racial relationships becoming more common place and the ease of travel around the globe i don't believe its possible.

If we are talking about race in a mental/social context then no, we are all the same. Just with different views/traditions.

I am extremely tired so i apolagise if i have gone off on a complete tangent. :)

No science points to their being any significant differences between human 'races'. As I'm sure some of you have heard, "The difference between individuals is bigger than the differences between 'races'". Race, as we know it, is nothing more than a convenient social construct.

I'm taking a history course on the Slave Trade and it's amazing how much of the racism that developed in the west was driven by money and power struggles, nothing more. Racial differences at the beginning of the slave trade were near none existent, the differences were classist more than racist.

There is no denying race. Every population has genetic variations unique to their sub-group. That's why some races are more likely to get specific diseases than others.

While I think it'd be really nice and fancy to think that race is nothing more a social construct, my mind cannot deny that are differences between

and

...

It's like arguing that brunettes and blonds do not actually exist. They are just social constructs

True, but those variations are so minimal that we would have to apply the term 'race' very loosely. As for physical appearance (sunsnail) I don't think that darker pigmentation or bigger noses would really merit being called a different race. These variations are only skin deep. If we were of different races we wouldnt be able to reproduce with other 'races', yet we can.

Certain races are more susceptible to certain diseases, which is why it's one of the first questions when you fill out forms at the doctors and/or emergency room.

Woops someone already said that, lol.

No way. Race is just a genetic variation within a species. Organisms within the same species can always reproduce. I think of race like different varieties of corn... There's white corn, yellow corn, etc. but you can cross breed the different corns and get mulatto corn.

Ok, then why are there many different kinds of dogs, bears, cats, etc.? The same things applies to humans.
