Who Is Sander Kleinenberg, you ask? The answer is simple, though the man behind it is not.
He commands respect as a prolific producer and international touring DJ where among the music elite, Sander is regarded as one of the best in his craft. The Winter Music Conference voters also named him European DJ of the year for 2006 and Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson call him for remixes. If that isn..t enough, he runs his own record label Little Mountain Recordings and he is the first DJ in the world to mix with DVD..s.. This Is Sander Kleinenberg. This Is his world.. and you are dancing in it.
As a DJ, Sander plays the finest electronic dance music and has graced the decks of the best clubs and festivals worldwide. His sets are internationally renowned and in 2001 his Radio 1 Essential Mix was voted best of the year. 2006 saw Sander successfully launch his own ..This Is.. nights around the world, which have included performances at Pacha Ibiza, Ministry of Sound London, Panama in Amsterdam, Redlight in Paris and at Crobar New York.
Always one to push the boundaries, Sander was one of the first DJ..s to embrace the audio-visual technology wholeheartedly in his performance. He is an innovator and creates his own explosive video content which has been incredibly well received around the world and includes the music video for THIS IS!! Using the new DVJ..s in the booth, Sander can have full control over the visual elements that are usually left to a club's own VJ, which allows him to express himself using a new medium .. DVD. Using the DVJ allows Sander to really stamp his personality on the night through the images, and custom video content, which also helps him connect with his audience on another level.
Sander is also an accomplished producer, who first appeared on the dance radar in 1996 with the now infamous NY Club Anthem "Y.D.W. (You Do Me Wrong)", which was released on Strictly Rhythm under his production moniker S&S Project. But it was in 2000 when the world really started to take notice when he released a string of EP..s called 4 seasons, and specifically ..My Lexicon.. which was played by every notable DJ across the globe and shot Sander to instant stardom. He has since had club hits as ..The Fruit.. a genre bending piece of funk and ..This Is Miami.., which was one of the biggest tunes of 2006. Sander has also remixed tracks for the likes of Royksopp, Mylo and Sasha & Emerson and in 2004 he won the DanceStar Award for Best Remix of 'Rock YourDONOTBLOCKOURADS Body.. by Justin Timberlake.
The Global Underground ..NuBreed.. CD marked Sander..s first release in a series of high profile mix compilations on some of the worlds most prestigious dance labels. This list includes the 2002 launch of the 'Everybody' compilations for Renaissance, and 'This is Everybody Too' following in 2004. After the success of these compilations Sander then released ..This is Everybody on Tour.. in 2005 through his own label Little Mountain Recordings.
It all started simply enough. The son of artists, Sander grew up in rural eastern Holland. He did the things that normal kids do. He played with dirt, ate paste, dabbled in football and learned his lessons. But the other kids knew he was different when he got his first turntable and headphones and fell in love with DJ culture. Soon, as the result of Sander..s incessant record playing, he was asked to DJ at his school disco. A talent was officially launched, and an entire schoolyard was ahead of its time. At 15, Sander started his first DJ residency at a small bar around the corner from his home.
Sander's musical taste has always been very eclectic. "By the time I was 14, I was listening to stuff like Mantronix," he recalls. "I was heavily influenced by American and British dance music. Remixes by Shep Pettibone, the sleeve art from Jon "Jellybean" Benitez releases, loops by Simon Harris, the movie Beat Street and Depeche Mode concerts.
It was this cocktail of influences that informed the taste of the budding Sander, and led him to making music of his own; launching a career that 15 years later sees him travelling all over the world and being one of the biggest DJs.. of the moment with America..s influential Urb Magazine describing Sander's career as "that of a slow but steady build culminating in absolute frenzy."
One thing..s for sure, he..s not your average superstar DJ, he's the guy who writes songs called 'Frog Dancing' and 'Slipper Sleaze' yet still gets away with it..This Is Sander Kleinenberg.
So what does the future hold for Sander? ..The future is not mine to see, but I am working hard in shaping it... says Sander. ..I have residencies in New York, Paris, London, Amsterdam and Ibiza and I hope to continue developing DVDJ-ing. I will also be working in the studio to create some freshly baked goodies.. |

Sydney Blu Bio
Constant and determined effort can break down barriers, and for one of Canada’s leading ladies behind the decks, carving her top spot among today’s finest burgeoning DJs is the result of her hard work. For the past six years, Sydney Blu has been DJing her electro-tinged, dirty tribal house sets to packed dancefloors across North America. “DJing was something I looked at and instantly new I wanted to do,” says Blu, who has built a following in gay-friendly and underground clubs. An Ottawa native, Sydney Blu spent the last of the 1990’s getting to know underground dance music at legendary nightclub Atomic. Immediately inspired, the trained pianist decided DJing was her career calling. When doors closed when she sought guidance, Sydney Blu pressed onward and taught herself. Determined to cut her own path, she moved to Toronto in 2000 and bought her first set of decks. She convinced the owners of NASA, a small club in Toronto’s Queen West district, to let her organize and DJ a party. The reviews were excellent and Sydney Blu landed her first residency in the side room of IT nightclub. “People began to party in there instead of the main room,” she recalls, her unyielding drive still evident in her crowd-pleasing DJ sets that are versatile enough for the corporate arena, like Citytv’s Toronto International Film Festival Schmooze. From there, Sydney Blu’s bookings multiplied and she was credited by local press as becoming one of the fastest rising DJs in Toronto, voted best newcomer in Eye Weekly’s 2002 DJ Poll. The next year, she headlined festivals on Canada’s East Coast and in Nevada. With a growing following, Sydney Blu began to promote her own events and invite some of the best local and international DJs to play. Her long-running Full Moon Thursdays, six-hour quarterly Blue Experience nights, and Bitchslap! events are renowned genre-crossing parties that play a big part in keeping up a thriving underground scene. In 2004, she released her first compilation YTO 2004 for Vancouver’s Live to Tape Recordings. Always ready for a new challenge, Sydney Blu ventured into producing music that year after graduating top of her audio engineering class. With studio partner Fabio Palermo, she has collaborated on signature bootleg remixes, a number of original tracks (also co-written by Toronto vocalist Mandy J and lined up for international release), and a remix of Grammy-nominated reggae artist Bunny Rugs for indie label COF Music. A residency in Mexico and regular jaunts to New York, Las Vegas, Chicago, San Francisco, Miami, Vancouver, Newfoundland, Cleveland and Detroit, and European and Asian dates on the horizon, are a far cry from her grueling beginnings only a short while ago. Today, Sydney Blu is a favourite resident at Toronto afterhours Comfort Zone, Footwork, and Canada’s biggest and most renowned nightclub, The Guvernment, where the crowds are often privy to her latest studio productions and remixes, and inspiration for her forthcoming compilation CD on Hi-Bias Records lined up for a North American tour. Doors are open now, and Sydney Blu’s pressing onward. |
