so who here has made their own furniture for their equipment to sit upon gracefully? i've wanted to make my own desk for a long time and the urge is just getting stronger with time! wot is generally the best material to use for a wooden finish? i imagine MDF is probably the easiest to work with.

i have an idea of my general dimensions it will be, however i've no idea how difficult it would be. i would say i've got the patience to pull it off and have been researching different types and tring to make a plan before just going right on in!

any advice would be much appreciated, below are my current dimensions.

Dimension | Size (inches)
--------------------------------------
height | 36
width | 80*
depth | 30

after looking on dual i think a 3 piece top section would be the most logical way to go so i only have to replace a small piece of the wood later down the line on getting new equipment, so for the width i have used the general width of a turntable (roughly 18 inches each) and added a rough width of 14 inches for the width of a xone 92 + 20* inches to allow for a border around this equipment. for the depth 2.5ft seems more than sufficient for room to add more features later on to the top surface area... and 3ft height should eliminate any having to lean forward/worry of back pains in the mix hehe.

havent thought about the lower portions yet so any ideas would be kool too.

thanks :D

I use a stand made of walnut. My father used to work at a youth detention center when I was very young. Some of the kids locked up there made the stand in the wood shop. Dad used it for years and years for his turntable and vinyls when I was a kid. Now I have it in my DJ/workout room supporting my TTs, mini stereo, and vinyl collection. Hand me downs FTW! I didn't technically make it, but I thought it had an interesting story to go with it.

I built mine.

yeah MDF is probably the best way of doing it, its relatively cheap, strong and light. I used a mixture of 12mm and 18mm which I then put veneer on to make it look a bit better.

basically what I did was (and this is a simplified version cos mine has 3 units and it gets hard to desribe):
made a rectangular base whatever size out of 2'x 4' pine
12mm MDF floor on top
18mm MDF sides
put a shelf about half way up
double thickness top surface, screwed to the sides using L brackets
ply or similar on the back, nailed to attach it to the sides (spose you could use MDF here again but it'd get prety heavy)

pretty simple. Just make sure to measure twice and cut once

Mine is basically 3 sections of that design, boleted together and the top is one piece that goes across all three sections (helps with stability). I then also did some stuff like put holes in the top to drop cables behind the amp/speakers. Thats just drilling down through the top, each TT also has a hole behind it, so the cables drop into the hole and then come up through the hole behind the mixer. I also made the floor of the middle section removable and a hole in that floor so all the power cables then sit beneath that too.

A couple of friends and one club up here have that mixer - and I absolutely LOVE playing on it :)

Feels like a tank!

i've been wanting to "sink" my mixer into the table for quite some while now. i was thinking of maybe sinking the cdjs too, but i dunno if that's really wise. i just think that a mixer that is clearly made to be mounted somewhere looks rather silly when it's just on the table.
anyway if i ever decide to mount my gear somehow i'd have to get a new table as my current one won't allow it.
i'd like to make my own though, but i'm such a n00b that i seriously doubt that would ever happen.

yea the table i have in mind will have my S3500's sunk into it along with mixer... i'll just have to make it in such a way it doesnt cause problems with loading cd's/blocking heat - i imagine with a little thought it wouldnt be too difficult. mixer should be fairly straight forward to sink.
