Review: Sasha and Luke Fair San Diego

okay, so i haven't seen sasha since last january at avalon with james zabeila, who stole that show, but wanted to see him again for some time and the chance had come.

drew, my friend sol and i headed down to san diego and get there in just over 2 hours. get to the club and get right in. we head straight for the only sane room in that place, where the dj is spinning house and get our spots covered up front. austin and alan b were tag teaming. i'm so used to hearing austin drop more electro and harder stuff so it was a change to hear some of the tracks that he was dropping. was a nice transition into luke fair's set.

at first luke kinda starts with what sounds like minimal, i'm like uh oh but then about 2 tracks in he starts up with the progressive house and just destroys it from there. loved his set!!!! first time i've ever seen him and rich (lexx400) was just telling me i needed to see him. so glad i got the chance!!!! he was great. other than major technical difficulties about 45 minutes in when he was about to drop a mix and everything shut off and no one could figure out how to get it back on for a very long 3-5 minutes. but he took in stride and humor and got it rolling again once the sound guys figured it out.

then sasha gets there with about 25 minutes left of luke's set and the crowd starts going crazy and chanting sasha's name and of course start pushing and shoving their way towards the front. not too bad though. you feel the excitement in the air. say what you will about sasha and his style or sets or productions but when a dj of that caliber walks in and commands that much attention then had to of done something right in all the years his been djing!!!!

once sasha gets on he digs in to a very deep, dark minimal set that i actually enjoyed!!!! it got darker and heavier as the night wore on and it was just SICK!!!! i loved it much better than the first time i saw him. i really am disappointed that i won't be hearing them tonight on funktion 1 with that sound but oh well.

had a great time. the crowd wasn't as obnoxious as i thought it might be due to it being sasha and all. in fact had a real nice guy from dallas protected my dancing space all night long and i had room to dance. and man did!!!! and my God, does that place have no veniliation????? i swear i lost 5 pounds of water weight due to sweating so much!!!!!! but i danced non stop from the moment i got there unitl the end.

only major downside at all was my camera's battery died right after luke's set, so no sasha pics but we will have drew's for that, plus he got one of me and sasha at the end of the night, i looked like but who cares!!! then the ridiculously drunk couple up front who decided to jump in each other's arms and fall into me and then never even apologized or even acknowledged that they hurt me ing foot!!!! bad club karma to them:whip:
and the huge fight that broke out behind us with drinks flying and everything. but the bouncers cleared that out fast!

nice to see search54(chris), austin scott and, well that's all that i saw. i'm sure there were others. thank you drew for getting that pic for me!!! and the ride down and back was quite entertaining to say the least. i think i broke my record time for getting back from san diego: 1 and a half hours!!!!! i went 90 and some over the whole way. all i could think about was sleep and what do i do the second i walk through the door, post on this damn forum board. well, i'm done, good night :)

haha when i go at like 8:30 for gigs i always complain that i'm freezing because the club is empty and the a.c. just blasts... but 3 hours later i'm always standing in a soaked tshirt. i think the tough part is, it's underground and the ceilings are a lil low.

anyways i thought the crowd was also really respectful; i heard a few people tell me what they heard him play in new york a few weeks ago etc so i think we had some other imports from all over.

heh - you would not believe the effort we went to get him a drink LOL. i ended up talking to the club owner to track one down for him but as there supposedly were undercover vice cops there they weren't taking the risk. at 330 when he got all pissy i'm like Sasha, you have a minibar back at your hotel....you'll be there soon enough.

last night rocked! I haven't seen belo that busy pre-11am in a long time. THe dance floor was just about packed towards the end of Alan and my set. It was awesome to see some many people getting down to the variety of progressive breaks and house that we were throwing down.

Sarah was def right in that this wasn't my usual sound, but then again, this wasn't your average night. The flow of the music was very important to set up luke properly so i'm glad it worked out so well and glad you guys enjoyed it :).

I thought luke did an amazing job, and he's a super cool guy to boot. Sasha as always commanded everyone's attention and out of the gate just threw down some deep dark nastiness! I could only stick around for about an hour because it was too damn packed and hot, but iI def liked what i heard.

Not sure waht the sound problem was, I was in the other room when that happened.

THanks guys!

Thanks again to Sarah for the drive :)

So as I don't really like DJ sets that much, here's my opinion on everything but that:

Belo is pretty cool, it's like Tentation had babies with a Miami club.

Things I didn't like:
The line to GET to the guestlist was the same line for will-call people with tickets going in. Can't they let people walk up to the GL to get tickets, THEN have them get in line?

The overdramatic "search". They opened my bag, picked up and looked under every single lense and thing I had in my bag...then decided not to search me or any of the pockets in the bag.

The accusation that my ID was fake. It's nice to be almost 27 and people still think you are under 21 but come on..."where are your glasses? what's your birthday?" and having them look at the ID, look at me, look at the ID, look at me x20.

Could have done with some air conditioning too for the DJ area, as the place was boiling hot.

For the photography, it was tough to figure out the settings. Lots of liquid smoke, very little lights and all black ceilings didn't help. No wonder most of the pics you see of Belo are of the brightly lit bar area and not the dark DJ area :)

No wristbands. They just have a general one for in/out and "all access" but everyone had them. Probably would be easier for security if they had a DJ booth one too.

Other than that, it was pretty fun. I think I might go back in July some time, and it should be easier to take pics now that I know the club a bit better.
