I cannot speak for the US, however, Canada has a number of laws in place by which any person who sponsors an immigrant or marries one, is responsible for any and all debts that person incurres with the government for a period of 5 years from the date at which the sponsorship started. This is to say; if I were to marry a non-citizen she would then receive landed immigrant status.... then she leaves me and starts to collect welfare... guess who's on the hook to pay back every cent the government gives her (or spends on her in terms of training or healthcare).. that's right, me. Many people have been burned badly by this (especially in the indian community of BC where arranged marriages with Indian nationals is commonplace).

Again, I don't know if the US has similar provisions and protections in their immigration law, however, I would be damn sure to know the law inside and out before even considering such a thing.

BTW, 20K is too low.

Good points! I’ll tell her. lol

Yea brian is right…double that .

Ughh, I could SO use 40k right now. That would rock.

jamie: do you realize that you would have to live with this dude for 3 years? also you would have to be married to this potential douchebag for 3 years. 2.5 technically but it takes 6 months to get divorced now. does it sound very appealing now? imho it doesnt. i know people who have done it though.

in general this does not exist in the states, BUT sometimes there are certain circumstances that require the immigrant and the sponsor to sign papers saying that the immigrant can NOT collect any sort of social welfare help. so no medicare, no social security, etc. i have a friend that had to do that for her father. they are from england.

:stongue: It's true people... Jamie and I have not discussed this prior to this thread, therefore, it's a good bet the offer was not made to her.
Lira
Well, she asked you what you would do... so we're now telling you what would've happened if you did :p
