Subey's plan, as it is, wouldn't work because of schools K-12.

there's no way around it unless you changed the school schedules
MrSquirrel
Almost all Federal offices in the D.C. metro area already work on a staggered schedule where you work any 8 hours between 8-6.

D.C. traffic is still a nightmare.

Then that's the place to study and see what's going on. I'll patiently wait for your report

I'd kill for the opportunity of getting a few credits at university from midnight to 6 AM. I'd love to work from 4 PM to 10 PM as well. It sucks because if you've got a fulltime job, you've got no time to do many things because everyone else has the same schedule you have!).

But international business is hampered by timezones. Think about all the little things, like office supplies etc that would be screwed up by having such a short effective work day.

My report?

What the is that supposed to mean?

I just mentioned that there is an example of this 'holy grail to end gridlock' everyone was speaking about. Do your own damn research if you want to know how well it works, I don't live in D.C.

I guess I can see if any of the street webcams in DC are usable as coarse traffic measuring instruments. Then see if that data leads to any new theorems.

I forgot all about this!

But there's a random street downtown Washington D.C. at 10:09 am. It's like a ghosttown, sure would want to arrive at work at 10:30 there.

I'll be out of town in tomorrow morning, but i'll try and get a series of shots captured on Wednesday morning.

Should I delete this first post? :conf:

many companies are already offering staggered work day plus "work from home" perks. many ppl I know, who work for large companies used to have to come into the office maybe 1x or 2x a day. Some had to work from home all the time, only commuting when needed. Most meetings were done by phone/teleconference/webex/etc. Furthermore, even when such options didn't exist, I managed to carve my own hours - I am never in the office before 9:30am, avoiding bulk of traffic.

I once did an experiment. I left home at 8:00 and got to work at 8:45am.

Next day, I left for work at 8:30am and was at work at 8:55, thereby reducing my commute by 20 minutes, simply by leaving 1/2 hour later. That's 20 minutes of idling in traffic, polluting, reducing lifespan of my breaks... and even my own lifespan, while I have to watch rear view mirror and make sure some idiot is not about to plow into me.

Think about it, how much better it would be for the environment, if we reduced 30% of the commuting population's emissions.

However, the flipside of that coin - the less traffic there is, the more incentive there is for people to drive to work, instead of taking public transportation. So, in a long run, I think it would just even out. The people who parked their cars and took a train to work, would now drive because there's less traffic. So, traffic and work start time serve as an incentive for people to commute, rather than drive.

well, at my jobsite we just changed our work schedule to beat traffic..
instead of starting at 7.00am and getting off at 3.20...
we now start at 6.30am and get off at 2.50

today me and my carpool buddy got home at 3.20 versus 4.10

so, works for me, except 6.30 is friggin early !
