Advice on buying a soundcard

Im looking for a good soundcard for my laptop.i have a vaio and i want a soundcard to sit into my PCI slot. i have no clue about brands or which are good or bad. could you please point me in right direction. also is there any sound card that can take pressure of CPU by doing some of its own processing??i heard there are such sound cards...

Laptops dont have PCI slots, I presume you mean PCMCIA?

There are some that have their own DSP, but most of them are quite expensive afaik, the cheapest ones that have DSP that I know of are the Emu ones, but I dont think the DSP effects on them are very good... |

They're okay, just not worth the hassle. There are better software effects without the downsides of a DSP. For instance, you can't do fast rendering, you have to do realtime rendering. This goes for all DSPs as far as I know. |
