hell of a birthday present if i do say so myself. :p

i'm not a big fan of sticking in my eyes so i'll stick to glasses. even though they broke at localized saturday. :(

i attended a lecture where an ophthalmologist strongly recommended staying away from lasik. the reason there's so little evidence to back anything up is because the procedure is relatively new, and the impact of it does not become apparent until later in life.

your eye constantly changes through life, and so, though lasik can fix the problem for a couple of years, it may not do so for the long term. the bad thing is, once lasik is performed, it's permanent, and the eye cannot be fixed the same way again (at least according to this lecturer, about two years ago). you may end up needing to wear glasses or contacts a few years afterward.

the only research done so far is on cadevers, and shows significant scarring to the eye post-surgery. i forgot all the negative effects of this, and i don't want to say something misleading, but do some research. the long term effects of having lasik can be damaging, and have no reversal (at least as of two years ago).

the research is very limited, and growing slowly. just wait dude, it's not worth it.

i've had lasik done almost 8 years ago. before my vision was -500 (both eyes) and i had to wear glasses or contacts (for sports). i can honestly say it's the best use of money ever. my sister also had it done 10years ago and still has 20/20 vision.

the only drawback? my night vision is a bit blurrier at night. and in almost 8 years my eyes have slightly gone worse (-100 each eye) due to the natural worsening.

well, the people arguing against it have every right to be cautious.

but it's like this. say a new treatment was found to cure aids. while millions are being cured, you choose to not take this treatment and instead continue to suffer the effects of the disease. "oh, i'm going to wait 50years until everything is 100% safe and tested."

a few years is fine, but 10+ years of safe vision, with many others getting it down without downsides? at one point you're going to have to weigh the positives with the negatives (1% failure rate i'm guessing) and make an informed decision.

wearing glasses is comparable to AIDS? no, I don't think so.

I've worn glasses for the good portion of my life. I wore contacts for about... 6 years. I don't feel like I have an "illness" because I need glasses/contacts.
