The other day as I waiting for the tramway I saw two mormon youngsters on their abroad mission. Easy to recognize by their clothing.

So I went over to them and started bugging them asking various questions but all in a very respectful matter.
I was actually interested in learning about how long they go on mission for etc

One of the guys gave me their declarations of faith. I didn't read it till this past sunday when I was spending the afternoon with the youth of my local christian church.

( btw I'm in France )
Well they all had a giggle when they saw this:
quote:
10. We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion will be built upon this (the American) continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory

So where on the American continent?

I doesn't say Usa or Canada or anything.

I say they should all go to Nunavut or Yukon.

 Idiots.... the word nation refers to a grouping of people with shared background, culture, language and practices... NOT citizens of a state. Looking at the word nation in this regard it's pretty clear that Canadians (the English ones anyway) and Americans are (generally speaking) one nation of people. Mexicans, on the other hand, do not have a shared language, culture, or background with Americans; therefore, they are a different nation. This is why you can own a Mexican but not a Canadian. Incidently, you cannot purchase any person from a formerly British population.

With regard to the idiotic "laws" stated in the subject open letter; it seems to me quite clear that there are parts of the bible that were writen in to support secular concerns. Rules governing the preparation of food, property, health, diet, garments, etc, likely all fall into this catagory.

I agree with this. An interesting though to ponder is just how much of the religion that we believe in is real and how much was made up by secular leaders to use as a means to control people.

This is where critical thinking and reason come into play. I wrote a good quote on this subject in the Noah's Ark thread....

quote:

Indeed, there is no way to know for sure what the intents of the writers of the various books of the bible were, hell, in most cases we don't know who actually commited each book to paper or exactly when. Some of the books are attempts to explain things that were unexplainable by the schollars of the time, others are meant to support the power structure of the community at the time, others are meant as morality guides, and others have multiple purposes. The bible is a difficult collection of books to make any sweeping judgments on because you have a collection of authors writing in different styles for different purposes. If one's goal in reading the bible is to gain an understanding of god (presupposing a belief in god) or to examine metaphysical questions then one needs to focus on the symbolism of the stories and the continuing themes therein. As I said before, the bible is difficult because it uses actual events to convey greater ideas, distinguishing truth from embellishment can be a promethian task. My personal position.... if there is a god it is probable that it is a being of reason (given the incredible structure of the universe) thus only the parts of the bible that can stand up to scrutiny through the application of reason can be valid. Those who blindly believe fail as Christians because faith must be an informed decision.

As I said before... we're really one nation so ownership of a Canadian by an American is not allowed... unless you want a French Canadian but who would... we don't even want them. So you can't own a Canadian... but maybe we can form a strategic partnership!
