I'm talking utilities, programs, browsers etc. I just got my new MacBook Pro and I'd like to hear from the Apple people out there what you all recommend. (Free stuff is even better!)
I've got Camino, for example and I love it. Very fast. |

Heya miamitranceman,
Are you new to Mac or did you just upgrade from an older model?
Anyway, Camino is indeed fast, just like Safari is but I'm still sticking with Firefox for the extensions,
but more importantly Greasemonkey.
Some applications for the generic day to day use: AppZapper (to 'uninstall' apps), Adium (IM),
The Unarchiver (for Zip, RAR etc.), Transmit and Cyberduck (FTP), Growl (I'll get to this one in sec),
VLC (Media Player), NewsLife (RSS Reader). These are my most used ones.
Now, Growl runs in the background and gives you notifications from other applications when something happens.
At first I didn't think much of it, but just gave it a run and really love it. Give it a go: http://growl.info/
Also check out UNO to get all the windows a unified look: gui.interacto.net.
But there are some issues with the newest iTunes, so you might want to wait for an update.
One of my favorite widgets is iStat Pro for system monitoring: http://www.islayer.com/.
For even more check out http://osx.iusethis.com/ and http://www.macupdate.com/
which should keep you busy for a while :).
I would suggest that you have a look at some Apple blogs to keep you updated.
If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me or add me on MSN! :)

Hey man. Thanks for the great post. Yes I've finally made the switch from a five year old Dell laptop. My family had a Mac LC 2 and Performa 6115 CD back in the day so I grew up on Macs but OSX is a huge difference!
I will definitely check out the stuff you posted. Anyone else have any must have programs? |

I bought my MacBook back in january. I needed a new pc badly and thought why not just try out a Mac laptop instead. It's not because I loath Windows or anything (well maybe a little bit), but just to try something new for a change. Absolutely love it and no regrets whatsoever.
Have fun with yours! :)

Yeah, I was in the same boat really. I tweaked my XP Pro to run extremely quick, and after all the Vista negativity going around, I figured I'd try something else. Glad I did! |

farris gives a pretty good list. firefox, quicksilver, vlc, and appzapper are my top picks of must-haves.
i'm a lifetime PC user, worked on macs over the years, but the 13" macbooks plus the MAJOR CONDITION FOR ME of being able run windows apps via parallels got me to finally own one. ironically, i've never had a need to run any windows apps.
anyways, in those first couple months, i downloaded and tried dozens of apps, comparing a lot of apps off the "top 10 best... apps" lists, and in the end, i only ended up keeping a small handful. |

Try vmware fusion - it works A LOT better than parallels, imo. |

Try Timbuktu for your remote desktop needs.
Also Parallels for all your virtual PC needs.
Both great apps. |
