So how's my metal kit?

I'm working on some epic metal just for kicks, the following mp3 is a keyboard instrument layered over the drumkit and guitar setup that I'm sequencing...

I don't have too many resources at my disposal... But I am wondering if any of you have suggestions, production tips. One thing I am currently unsatisfied with is my current snare -- sounds fairly 80s without enough mid-low range energy or snap. |

Sounds nice. The drums do sound electronic, but that's not inherently a bad thing, it depends on what sound you're tryin to achieve. |

Okay... I changed the kit-demonstration. I'm mostly looking for critique between the guitar palm and non-palm playing (You'll recognize the Rammstein riff). Also, I changed the snare drum.

Damn! I wish I owned and played electric at times like this. |

I used to produce death metal on a 4 track recorder, before I got into computers and producing EDM. I hardly ever touch my guitar anymore. Sometimes I get in the mood to produce some metal, but it's always a hassle to hook my guitar to the PC.
Anyway, about your tune. Musically it sounds good, nice composition, but the overall sound is really rough. Sounds like something is spiking into the red, it's all distorted, really harsh. I don't mean just the guitar.
What guitar VSTi are you using? I haven't found a good one for distorted guitars. Fruity Slayer is pretty good for clean guitars. The palming sounds fine I guess, a bit fakey though. Probably nothing you can do about that. You could vary the pressure on the palming a little, make it sound less robotic.
The drums sound better on the second version. Find some real drum samples, they'll sound a lot more realistic. Use just a teeny bit of reverb on the drums. |
