I've seen the whole series like 4 times now. Every time I see the ending I get bits that I didn't get the last time. Even at that, its really hard to understand what they wanted to do with it. Did you see the movies? Because in the movie they developed and alternate ending. |

| Yeah show actually did a number on my thought process.Deep mother show.If you study up on all the symbolism in it it's a trip.Best thing ever broadcasted on television.I've seen it in its entirety a total of 12 times.The end movie is wicked good.:D |

the movie makes sense, you just have to watch it a few times over.
the evas are built on the souls on the pilot's mothers (hence the age of the pilots). asuka's eva awakens to protect her from dying (though she gets killed anyway). the white evas all use kaoru dummy plugs, because the commission hopes to become god by them. kaoru like rei is a soulless being with physical similarity to the angel, although rei seems to be also be based on shinji's mom. gendo was hoping to use rei to effectively become god, but rei (and unit 01, with the soul of shinji's mother) rejects gendo and opts for shinji instead. lilith is the mother of god.
at the end with the giant rei, everyone's body dissolves because their at field (the border of their souls) breaks down. the spirit and physical matter of everything melts together to form god, which is the summation of all living things and is fronted by shinji. shinji decides this isn't what he wants, and creates himself and asuka as the only two beings on earth. once he realizes what he's done, and remembers that he hates asuka, he tries to strangle her, but fails because of his feelings for her (you see her eye move around the end).
unit 01 spirals off into the distance, a more permanent marker of the human race than earth would ever be, hence the flashbacks to shinji's mom around then. |
