James Holden @ Rex Club, Paris 2/17/2007 WTF!

I listened to this set yesterday and today, and I am so torn. I'm like many others who were ready to worship Holden after Balance 005. However, also like many others, I was disappointed at the direction he went after the release.

The first 28 minutes is great stuff, really hard and high paced. When I first heard this, I was beginning to think Holden was about to become my favorite dj again. However, at about the 31 minute mark the pace and the mix loses its wheels and goes to . After the diversion into a really strange place (especially given the very consistent and clear sound he was going for in the first half) the mix never seems to recover. The pacing is mediocre at best, and there really is no consistent atmosphere or mood he seems to be going for. Granted, good tracks are spotted about, but the total absence of mood and a consistent atmosphere left me scratching my head.

For those of you that have heard this mix, can you speak to these issues. I would be really interested to hear from those who still love Holden and what you think of this, or hopefully direct me toward better recent sets of his.

I would download it, but apparently I'm not good enough at reading wingdings or whatever the this is:

I guess that makes that first one a 6. When the hell did they go to this nonsense?

Agreed, retarded. But anyways...

I was singularly unimpressed by Holden's technical skills when I saw him in 2005. There were train wrecks, and an out of time acapella that played for a full minute.

I'm recently at minute 26 and so far it's really crappy. Nothing compared to when I saw him 2 years ago

I am also confused about the thread title (gig in Paris) and the name of the file (gig at The End, London). I listened to the London set and I'm sure the correct tracklist was the one I posted.

Ah I see, its indeed the correct tracklist for the set @ The End
