1. Have an idea;
2. Type your text;
3. Find a publisher;
4. Tell them a bit about your text;
5. Wait for their approval
5.n. If they don't approve your text, send it to another publisher and go back to step 4;
5.y. ???
6. Profit;

A friend of mine has just published a couple of romances, and I'm looking forward to publishing a grammar, among other things.

Anyway, this friend of mine literally had to "beg" for a publisher, and managed to find a new publishing house that needed (who would've thought?!) writers. In my case (which is somewhat different), I'm trying to draw the attention to my work and, no matter how slow the process is, it seems to be working - I'm going to São Paulo in August showcase some of the stuff in a congress :)

Do you have an idea for a book? That's usually the best place to start.

don't feel bad, my friend's dad co-wrote a book on neuropsychology (or something like that). my friend's a liberal arts major; he never going to understand that so why would he bother? that doesn't make him bad son.

That happens, and that's the problem with art in general.

1) Dune, as you said, was rejected by all those publishers (I didn't know that);
2) Akutagawa Ryonosuke, one of the greatest Japanese authors of last century, was told by all his friends that his writings were worthless;
3) Franz Kafka, it seems, didn't like his own stories, so there you've got a text rejected by its own author :p

But, yeah, give it a try! ;)

steal ideas.

I usually write down plot summaries from beginning to end, edit out any inconsistencies, add new ideas, revise, finalize, but when i sit down to start writing the real deal, i get bored as and leave a blank .txt file.

I've had two novellas published. both of them were online, and one i got paid for it (lol, it was $5). but hey, you gotta start somewhere, amiright?

the first story i ever got published, i submitted to an online magazine (ezines), and they sent back their criticisms and compliments...and asked for some minor changes. i made the changes, resubmitted , and wallah.....

And The Music Played On...

but yeah, i'd suggest you start small and work your way up.

it also depends on your writing style, and what your good at. my second story that was published, was pretty much written in the form that i speak. so i'd say about 30-40% of the piece was dialogue between characters. the first one (linked above) was written similar to that of a newspaper, with hardly any dialogue at all. try different things, and see what you like best.

+1 - Before writing anything, take a look at what Schopenhauer says on authorship and style.

I mean, you should change your screen name to "Henning". That sounds totally bad-ass like, "Bauer", "Heterodestructor" or "Desregrado" :p
