I agree to some extent, but...if a guy who knows what to play in normal situation where the crowd goes to an event which is in his style...then he should know what to play...
In case you want to take a gig just the kicks and you have to play for a top40 crowd its not a terrible think to ask others to help :)
EDIT: I dont' make much sense here, do I? |
I know what you're saying. OPs question is 100% legit. Heck, I'm playing for mostly top40 crowd tonight and this thread helped me quite a bit. Although I will throw in plenty of trance, since the host likes it. My approach is to start out with some electro house and top40 remixes, then do a few breaks (wall of sound, gypsy) and then transition into some vocal trance (ATB, Above and Beyond, etc). |

And a 'nerve calming' drink doesn't hurt either!
BOOsTER: Thanks for that list of remixes. The stuff I use is probably outdated now, since I haven't had a Top40 gig in over 6 months (I've been lucky to only get booked for EDM lately)! |

you're welcome...
also the "nerve calming drink" is a good idea...if you keep it at 1 only!
:D
nothing can ruin your night more than being totally drunk lol |

dj spiel and spoonz: "Dont play what everyone else plays man" "You have to develop a unique style man"
i totally agree with you guys...i do want to develop my own style and play music that i like...rather, i want people to enjoy the music that i play...but the problem is that this is a totally mixed crowd...only a handful on EDM fans...rest assured, once everybody is drunk and high on whatever, i will be playing house...the cheese is just to get people on the floor and get em drunk...then, its all house!
booster, thank you very much for your reccomendations and suggestions...i have a few of those already...ive been downloading quite a few remixes of top 40s and otherwise...as for the rest, im going to get them right away...thanks once again...cheers!

its my first gig, we all gotta start somewhere right? but thanks for taking time out from your busy schedule and dropping that golden suggestion.

Of course, but a DJ should be able to make up his own tracklists. In fact, that's more or less the only thing that matters at the end of the day. |

you're right My Mystery but keep in mind im only asking for suggestions and reccomendations and anything that will help me as i don't have ample experience as yet...im not asking anyone to make my tracklist for me...and besides, im just asking for help...it aint a crime...that how we all learn...by trying it out and getting help...
cheers. |

a buddy and me finally did our fisrt gig last night...went okay...nothing too great...i mean there were a few ppl dancing throughout the night but the majority would only come on if we played some hip hop...but some did appreciate the house music we
spun...a good first time experience...we learnt alot...definately...
i hope this helps first timers
1) in a city like ours where house lovers are only a handful, make sure you have enough variety of music and keep mixing it up...i mean dont just stick to house for like 10 minutes and then hip hop for 10 minutes because people loose interest and you'll notice the people
moving of the floor...keep it changing, play one trck hip hop, then one house, then one whatver...i know thats against the whole concept of a party where you preferably want to maintain a flow and progression in the music throughout the evening, but hey, ppl here get bored easy...you need to keep throwing different sounds at them, different beats and tempos...
2) second, make sure you have ENOUGHHHHHHH!!! music on you...we took around 80 tracks to the gig...more than half the tracks we took (house), people did not enjoy and we ended up running out of tracks to make ppl dance to...so we ended up playing quite a few tracks more than once...how lame! but we had to keep the floor alive :(
3) if your going to spin at a friends party or at a house party where theres an open bar, and you get a feeling that ppl arent really into EDM, make sure people are really DRUNK before you start spinning house...keep them busy with top40 until then...only once they are drunk will they enjoy the house music...(what an insult
to EDM...one has to be drunk to be able to dance to it :( )
4) in the last one hour of the gig, this drunk dude comes up to my buddy and i and says he's got his hard disk and he'd like to spin on our laptop for a while...we didnt want to tell him to FUK OFF!!! so we kept telling him to give us a few minutes in the hopes that the party will have ended by then...i mean we politely kept delaying not wanting to start anything considering he was drunk...and he ended up yanking out the usb sound card in the middle of the gig. the music
stopped and then came the BOOooos and all...lol waht a jakass!!!!!!! the dude pulled out the godamn sound card in the middle of the gig and we went without music for like almost 10 minutes...
lesson: make sure you'r booth is in a godamn cage!!!! dont let anyone near the booth, especially people who cant control themselves while theyre drunk...this will also reduce the number of people coming up to you and asking for requests...
anways, thanks for the assistance everybody who replied to this thread and other first gig threads...it has been tremendouse help and assitance...without reading the info on this forum, first timers like us would be totally dumb founded and ill-equipped to spin...i
appreciate all the effort that has gone into threads like these and other help threads...cheers guys...and good luck to everyone with their music!!!
ill post pics of the gig once i get my hands on them to give you guys a better idea of how things are around here...cheers all! |

I always told these kind of people something like "hey, yer drunk, now get the out of my booth it's my party, not yours"
Once I even told the club owner to off because he went upto the booth during my gig... ;)
learn to deal with it...and don't ever let them touch your ... ;)
EDIT: if they guy touched my soundcard, he would have both hands broken the second he did... |
