Hehe, it looks I'll be your guiding hand for the time being
As for the mixer, the best thing IMO is to get something basic to begin with. Once you've got the hang of the whole DJ thing, you will get a sense of what you really want in a mixer and then upgrade accordingly.
Whatever you do, DON'T buy Pioneer mixers, especially not for home use. They are all right but definitely WAY too overpriced (mostly 'coz Pioneer seems to be riding their reputation more than anything else).
For US$250 you can get ... umm ... not too much. If you want to start out with only two decks then there is no point in getting a 3 or 4 channel mixer. Go for something basic like the Numark 1001x (1002x if you want killswitches ... they're not all too useful IMO). It won't cost you too much, you'll have money left over for records and nice cartriges (I recommend the Ortofon OM series ... same as Concorde, only headshell mount and lower price ... you can get the cheapest "pro" ones and put Nightclub tips on them which will give you the same performance as real Nightclub carts). If you really MUST have something bigger, try the Behringer DX-500. Nice mixer that can be had for REALLY cheap (since Behringer is coming out with a new series). The only thing about it is that its EQ is rather weak. The Vestax mixers will cost you at lest US$350-ish for the 175 and US$420-ish for the 275. You really shouldn't aim higher than that for your first mixer (especially if it's only for bedroom use).
Hope this helps. |

First, it's Mr. Skywarp to you ... ;)
Second, anything Allen & Heath ... although it would be an overkill for home use. I'd go with Vestax 275 ...
Allen & Heath: XONE:62 ...
VERY pretty, and yours for only US$1199 |

For AU$500 new you couldnt get anything..!
Used, you may be lucky to get a Vestax mixer in the PMC series.. Not many others which are good value on the Aussie market |

that's a nice mixer, and i have heard a lot of people go on about it.. the only thing that i see a problem with, is the measly 4 light channel strip for each channel. how can you monitor with that, there isn't enough resolution..
here's a pic of the 32, so you know what i am talking about, it has the same lights.

I think i am getting the Vestax 275 |
