why do hiphop dj'd call thier stuff mix-tape???

honestly I dont get it?? the is on a cd man...why in the hell do they call it mixtape? does it give it that extra ghettoness? I understand back in they day, but why now?

I'm probably giving a serious answer to a question that was just meant to be a joke but isn't "mixtape" in hip-hop basically like what "demo" would be in the rock world? I think it is (or was originally) something you're not trying to make money from directly but something you're using to showcase your production skills as widely as possible in the music community itself so that you can get paid to make beats for a rapper's "album." I teach high school to a bunch of hip-hop kids. I only know what they tell me.

It's a legacy term. Kinda like how someone who plays music with Ableton is still referred to as a DJ, even though there are no discs to jockey.
