first gig...a simple question

hey guys

so there are on an average, 2 break downs in every EDM song...or most EDM songs...

when you guys spin live, do you guys play the song through both break downs or do you guys change tracks before the breakdown in order to keep the flow? because im thinking, if i let the whole song play including breakdowns, it will significantly slow down the dancefloor and make people stop dancing twice in each song...so what should i do? i was thinking let the part before or either after the break down play and skip the breakdown altogether so that the beats dont stop...is that how its done? if not, how should one go about doing this?

tease them with the build ups, layer tracks, keep em on their toes

I use a CD with loops...I have there a lot of different 4 to the floor or breakbeat loops which I layer on the breakdowns because theres far too many people who can't dance during a breakdown without having a strong rythm...

you can do anything you like though...even re-edit your tracks as kinda "dance mixes" and so on...whatever comes on mind and seems it "could" work.

thanks guys...ive never done that before...like i mentioned, havent played live ever so this is new to me...im definately gonna try this and practice it...can you guys tell me where i can get these beats from to layer on the breakdowns? as in any good beat loops or something?
theognis1002
i usually mix whenver i wanna get out of the tune :stongue:

i consider myself apart of the dancefloor ... illtry to sense when the floor is wanting more song or more breakdown

but usually the one of the breakdowns is really short.... probably just need to pick better songs with more energy and shorter breakdowns/greater buildup when u want the floor to move faster

nothing wrong with using loops from other tracks

+1

You could even just sample the first couple beats of the song which would probably make breakdown sound smoother than if you used samples from other songs.

Two thoughts on that:

1. It might "slow down the dancefloor", but, at the same time, if you have a never-ending kick beat, you can't manipulate the audience. You need to give them time to rest before a you drop a bombshell.

2. RE-EDITS ARE YOUR FRIEND!!! I can't say that enough. A lot of "dance music", ironically, isn't really dancable. If you have a track with a two-minute breakdown, you might want to slice and dice it to make it more appropriate for a dance floor. Plus, it's a great way to put your own spin on the tracks and get known for doing something more than pushing buttons and turning knobs.

What programs are out there that could be used for editing? Are you talking about editing on the fly?
BOOsTER
well ABLETON!

I mean re-editing tracks in ableton is so easy you could do most of it on the fly even;)

DJChrisB
Yup. Ableton lets you slice and dice stuff super quick. I don't use it to do on-the-fly editing too much purely because I just personally don't enjoy DJing on a laptop. But, a good number of the tracks I have on CD are my own personal re-edits I did in Ableton. This lets me make the tracks do what I want them to do and puts my personal touch on them.
Andryuha
I had ableton for all this time and didn't even know it could be used for such things :(
