...why do people say that older trance (early-mid 90s) sounds good or has 'soul'. Most of it has uncomplicated drum patterns (kick-hihat-kick-hihat) and everything sounds weak in the mix. No substantial kick, no drive, no flow. Every single trance track I've heard that was produced before 1999 sounds like an 8 year old produced it. If people were coming out with tracks like that nowadays then they'd get bashed on places like TA. And how does it have 'soul'?! This really beats me. 'Soul' is a certain undefinable human quality that touches human emotion. All early trance sounds like techno with random 303 arpeggios and a dry supersaw lead playing a 2 bar melody.
Looking back at trance and how it used to be and saying, 'wasn't it great, i wish it was still like that now' is like saying i wish music never progressed technically and musically and we never moved forward. I can understand that around the end of the nineties trance became extremely commercial, but that doesn't mean everything before that was better.
Please explain to me why the early 90s era of trance was so great because I would really like to know. |

Who could say such a thing?
A. Someone who hasn't heard and is just being ignorant.
B. Someone who is stupid.
C. Someone who happens not to like trance from the 90s but reveals himself as both ignorant and stupid when he implies those who like 90s trance are idiots. |

1. people had their own ideas. Nowhere near as much rehashing was done as is done today, and those that were were often done by respected artists.
2. because "trance" is a state of mind, not a "put hands in the air for the sake of it" music. It's meant to play with your senses and give u an actual feeling of being entranced. Tracks didn't need huge breakdowns, and sets had a real flow to them. More could be accomplished with a change of key or change of melody slightly and the flow wasn't lost.
examples
cosmic baby - heavens tears (dj kid paul rmx)
humate - love stimulation (pvd's love club mix)
odysee of noises - firedance
Anything from Salt Tank, Qattara, Human Movement, Art of Trance, Union Jack, Cosmic Baby, Quivver, Oliver Lieb, Man with no name, Red Jerry etc
3. It's so easy now to polish a track & make every level sound spot on. Advances in technology mean that they can make it sound clearer to your ears, but how many tracks from the last couple of years will you be playing in 10 yrs, as opposed to the opposite for the stuff from the 90s?
4. GOA. true trance, hypnotic, melancholic, mind altering and brilliant. Futuristic sounding.
5. less artists - nowadays anyone can get a label or release a track, look at your list of labels, "realmusic recordings" "armada" etc. All of these are releasing mediocre tracks and everyone and their illegitimate pet rat have been signed. |

Ok so bascially:
1. Becasue people were more original, even though theres not a lot you can do with a kick, hi hat, clap, bass and arpeggio.
2. Because it put you in a trance so it matched its genre description.
3. Because the elite few still bother to play it to this day.
4. ??? how is this a reason why 90s trance is good
5. Because there were only a few labels and producers providing the tracks rather than a lot of labels and producers providing the tracks. Plus, everything produced now is mediochre and the videogame music of the 90s you call trance was (and still is appearantly) absolutely mind blowing to the fully developed sober adult.
...well im convinced. |
