Layering drums

I was wondering how you all layer your drum tracks. I use ReDrum with Ableton and in the past have created a pattern I like in ReDrum and copied the midi track in Ableton. Then, towards the end of the process record it as audio. Either that or record 5 or so loops I like to use throughout the song and add another track for drum effects. The issue I run into is with eq'ing, compression and automation. Since it is one track, there's just less flexibility to alter tracks and get the exact sound I want.
I know I can rewire ReDrum so each sound in the module is its own track and submix later - is it worth setting up like that? Or since that will leave me with 20 tracks in Ableton (10 midi 10 audio), should I just wire the kick as its own and keep the percussion and stuff on one track?
Just curious if anyone was willing to share any thoughts on getting the drums wired the best way.
Thx. |

i just build up my drums in ableton on individual tracks so I can easilyu EQ them, not sure why your rewiring to do this? |

i think you'll find if you seperate things out one indvidual drum/perc noise per track you will have a lot more control. |

i use to rewire redrum into ableton as well because I liked using Redrum. But now I just drop a simpler for every percussion sample I want and do it that way. Plenty of control, fewer tracks than rewiring and simpler is just so.....simple to use :D
EDIT: I will then route every percussive track to a single audio track so I can compress and eq the lot together but will still do seperate eq'ing and effects etc on each percussive track where necessary. |

I've just always used ReDrum... I guess for no other reason than it is what I've always used. I'll give Impulse a shot - don't have Simpler though... may look at upgrading that.
Thanks for the replies. I'll load each sound in a different track for more control and submix it later in the track.
Thx all! |

Battery + one MIDI track for the drums + another MIDI track for filters, if necessary. Simple. |

You do have simpler. It comes with ableton. Sampler is what you have to upgrade to... |

Right - just realized this. Have actually never used any of Ableton's instruments/samplers. Thanks for this.
DigiNut and echosystem - thanks for the suggestions. I am going to grab a demo of Battery to try out. |
