Technical computer question re processor speed
View this Thread in Original format

Hey I currently have a Pentium 4 2.4 GHZ with 512 MB of RAM, and want a new computer since the newer games are running too slowly to play properly. I have found a shop that is selling an AMD AM2-940 Athlon64 3200+ with 1gb of RAM for $600. I don't know too much about computers so my questions are: Is an AMD 3200+ equivalent to a pentium 4 3200? Would this new computer run a lot faster than my old one? Or perhaps someone knows of a better deal?
Any help would be appreciated

there is no good reason to be buying an AMD currently. intel got the jump on them. go with a core 2 duo :)

oh, heres a really good site you can buy components (if youre happy to put together a pc, its really not that hard)

Also, while considering the processor speed an RAM requirements for your current games dont forget starcraft 2 is out later this year, i'm gonna be buying a new computer a week before it comes out so i can get something top shelf and that runs it wickedly.

definately go dual core.. for not much more you could get a much better system if you built it youself as pck says.

normally i'd say horses for courses, just get something that'll suit what you really need, but these days, there's no sense in not going dual core.

Is there much use going for one of the quad core things?
I need to build a new PC someday in the next few months, it's all very confusing and expensive :(

for a start, sounds like a rip off? what else is with it? ie video card etc?? should be able to do a core2duo machine with decent gfx card, 2gb ram etc starting from 800-900

dunno if it still holds but when i done my pc back in feb, basically if you're gonna overclock you go intel core2duo, otherwise you go AMD x2. (Especially the latter if you're gonna be using 64bit, but overclocking makes this statement void).

Also to answer your question, the amd 3200+ is not equivalent to the p4 3.2, it IS better, but you can get a machine that's still loads better than the 3200+ on a budget. a 3200+ cpu is worth what, $50 these days? O_o if you go amd, get an x2!

also, 1gb in a new pc is just wrong. go atleast 2.
add a few more 100 to your budget if you can, and you can get a kick ass machine

what are you using it for that's so cpu intensive and will be using 4 cpu's? also their prices are MUCH higher. just go dual core, much better value for money, atleast for now, and the near future.

i've overclocked my dualcore 80%, it's as faster if not faster than the entry level quad core muahaha. and yet, a fraction of the price!

Was thinking about getting back into computer games again for some amusement but mostly it would get used for mixing, word processing and the occasional playing around with graphics. Put it this way, my current one is about 5 years old so I'm not playing anything current and a quad core would at least have some shelf life as a long term machine I thought for things in the future.
Oh, do they work with XP? Because I'm not using that damn Vista thing!

Yes to XP, and nothing you've said says get a quad core, it all says go bang for buck. What machine have you got atm ? Your new machine will probably be ~15x faster, or more!

i got my 3200+ back in 2004.

its still an "ok" processor, but i wouldnt buy one now. im going to get a new vid card and try and get another year out of my mobo/cpu before i do a good upgrade.

my 9800pro is what is letting me down game wise.

It's a P4 2.4gigathings with about 1gig of ram and some kind of video card Radeon something, 80gig SATA hard drive... hell it's been years since I bothered to be interested in it :haha:
It was a good machine when I made it, thinking the same principle if I buy high end now, it'll still be a useful machine 4-5years from now as I have no intention of really upgrading along the way and I don't know or care to overclock anything either.

I saw some video cards with liquid cooling on them the other day...
