DJ's and Dancing

Do you have to know how to dance if you want to be a good DJ?

What are your thoughts?
Spoonz
no... u're a DJ not a Dancer, while both are branches of Performing Arts, they are both totally different. Of course, if u wanted to incorporate them both into ur performance then that is ur choice.

Not gonna act like I have experience here but that sounds about right. Dancing is about bodily movement... DJing is about picking moods(in the songs) that go well together and making them sound better through beatmatching and effects.

Don't really see much overlap between the two.

That's like saying should I be a good rapper to be able to read people?

Exactly. This is why we take up DJing.

Although you'll realise on most nights out, more and more people should be taking up DJing, particularly as the night progresses.

I mean just dance, in any way you want. You don't have to spin on your toes or anything. You know, shakin' your groove thang.

This has to be the most random question I've ever seen :stongue:

Dancing != DJing

Most DJs I've seen only dance with their hands. I'd suggest doing that.

If your feeling 'it' when spinning then move to the music, don't just stand there like a zombie but other than shaking your hands and tapping your feet there isn't all the much you should have time for if your paying enough attention to your decks and what the people on the floor are responding to.

If you mean when your not spinning then it doesn't really matter, do you need to be a world champ race car driver to be a world class mechanic? As a DJ though, you really should be going to clubs every once in awhile to see whats happening in the local scene so you can't help but pick up a little here and there...you tend to find a sense of rhythm useful when DJing and that will help your dancing too.

Dancing and Djing are different things, you might be able to rip it up on the floor or not, you might be able to make others rip it up when your in the booth or maybe not, if your lucky you can do both, if unlucky neither but either way who cares, just have fun.

worth pointing out I think here is that there aren't really any pre-requisites to being a DJ other then a love for the music and the determination to keep at it until your good.

A coke habit and an addiction to easy women helps, but these things can be developed over time.
