Low Level Noise - What and Why?

Hello all.

I've nearly completed my latest track but I've come across a problem. There is constant low level noise throughout the track, even if the track isn't playing.

Allow me to try and explain.

I'm using Ableton. The more tracks I create, the more low level noise gets created. For instance, I have impulse (drum sampler) for my drums with a load of audio tracks created to process each individual drum channel. It seems that the more audio tracks I create for this, the more noise builds up.

Also for my synths. I have multiple audio tracks setup to receive different parts from my virus ti. Again, the more tracks, the more noise build up. This gets worse when I start adding compressors with high settings on these tracks as the compressors then boost the noise.

Even when nothing is playing, I can hear the low hissing sound and can see some activity on the master meter. Once the track plays, you cant really hear any noise but then at the main breakdown, when all goes quiet, the noise is really prominent.

Can anyone tell me

a)why is this happening?

b)how do I stop it?

Thanks for reading...

can you mute the tracks in the mixer, when they are not playing anything?
G-Con
yeah i thought that could be a possible work around but the noise must still be there when the tracks are playing which must be muddying the mix and taking precious headroom

maybe not, if you are compressing "nothing" to . When there is sound playing the noise is relatively lower.

sorry but not sure i know what you mean. can you explain this please?

What are the inputs of each track set to? It's good practice to set each to 'No Input' as opposed to an external in, unless you're routing from a different track. In my experience at least. I've experienced the same thing, and this has helped. If your master has noise when idle, then an individual track has noise. (or multiple)

maybe you could try to mute all your recording sources in soundcard options? I mean...ableton usually sets the ins on the audio tracks to ext. in, which shouldn't be monitored, but...hey...what do I know...I'd try this if I were you.

One possibility I can think of is if your drum samples have a little noise, and you're compressing the crap out of them, and doing it on several individual channels instead of 4 or 5 groups, you're probably amplifying the normally inaudible noise to audible levels.

There's really no reason why you need a ton of drum tracks, even if you do a lot of stutter edits and other oddball processing. And it sounds like too much compression is part of the problem.

I guess it could also be a design flaw in Ableton Live, but that seems doubtful to me.

Any hardware set up?
