Okay, so... I've got two (2) Remixes (although the melody is completely different in both) going for the Judge Jules thing. I've been switching back and forth from one to the other but decided to get one near completion to post for criticism. Lord knows I need it! :D
This is my second piece using vocals, first using vocals in the trance genre. Please yell at me if my vocal treatment sucks. Melody is original.
OVERALL: I've been working on this track for hours upon hours today, and it's time to take a break from this specific track. Therefore my mixdown/EQing is probably crap and I'd appreciate any and all pointers on high/low/notch/boosts on ANY parts. (I already think my kick is a BIT weak, and my vocals are too upfront.) My ears are worn out and time is running short!

Thanks so much! And I'll be sure to check out your tracks too, just let me know! :D

I do quite like it, seems the vocals are a bit off sometimes too (yay, I'd think Jules would cut them to be easily sync-able)
I like that little glitching you did on them...
overall sound is quite well balanced, but I'd definitely use a maximizer just to bring the level up a bit to some kind of "standard"
You have quite a few original ideas here, but the synth that goes from the beginning playing that 4-note melody could variate a bit more...
overall pretty good one, good luck for the contest :) |

Thanks a ton Booster! I appreciate the comments greatly. I'll take a second look at the syncing of the vocals. It wasn't bad syncing up individual parts to the song, since you have some give, but getting separate harmony parts to sync together is a different story.
Thanks, and good luck to you as well! |

i like this a lot,
the arp sound is awesome, reminds of Zanzibar, but if anything I think its a wee bit too loud in the mix,
I like the vocal effects, but would maybe put the 'stuttered' parts on a separate track with less reverb just to emphasize the rhythm a bit. also vocals are maybe a bit quiet, but thats a matter of preference...
i love when it kicks off at 3mins, nice build
very cool track :toocool: |

Well thanks for the comments, they're greatly appreciated.
I'm going to take a look at my levels and see if I can't get a bit more out of the mix.
Any other comments before I submit this? Ton of views... not so many comments :( oh well...
Thanks anyway! |

listening...
i think that the beginning should be a little drawn out. i think you are introducing elements every 4 bars? the synths in my opinion need to be more wet, especially the vocals.
i feel that when everything kicks in it could use more energy.
that's about it, the levels of the instruments are a little bit off but everything is fine. cool synthesis, I like those instruments used. keep up the good work! |

Thanks azndragon, comments appreciated.
Yeah, going to drag the beginning out, had that on my to-do list.
I'll look into the wetness of things and see if they don't mudden up the mix any, which I'm wary of. Any other opinions on this point?
I think I've pulled a bit more energy out of the mix with some EQing, we'll just have to wait and see.
Tomorrow I'm going to rework the mix/Eqing, and see where I'm at.
Thanks again! :D |

| You can't really EQ energy into a mix. That was a hard lesson I learned recently. Granted, you can make things sound fatter with EQ but that will only go so far. I guess what I mean with more energy, is more background sounds and effects to keep things interesting. The beginning, middle, and end sound pretty similar. Just more thoughts if you wanted. |

| hey, i just think it's a cluttered mix and the vocal sounds out of place...good start tho.you could probably cut a big portion off too...like 2 minutes....or add somthing new. |

Nice synth playing that melody. Just think the track could need some more variation. The vocals sounds good, a bit low but definitely pretty coool! Nice job! :toocool:

Nice tune there, good beat, catchy but not too commercial (which is a good balance).
What I would critique is something beyond what you can change in the song at this point: basically the whole mix/drive/punchiness issue. Its good, but you know, the better you get, the better you feel you need to be. It all comes down the the individual instruments, all used, placed and eqed properly.
Anyways, great stuff keep it up! |

Just my two cents on the production piece:
The arpeggio melodic lead in the beginning is nice but for me happens very soon. Also the highs of the snare/drum type thing come in on the 9th beat which is messed up.
Vocals in the beginning seem to be dry, flat, not full or rich. Might be a digital recording on the vocals, I don't know
the 43 second melodic lead is sweet!
@ 45 see if you can put more deepness into that bass and that will really own!
SWEET Technique on the vocals after around 1:15 <-- that is awesome!
2:56 nice drop here, I like how there is an echo of the vocals that are in the backdrop of the soundscape. I'd suggest using that in other places in the track as well.
Quality syncing of the vocals :) Something that isn't the easiest thing to do. At this point 4:50 there is one melody that is getting annoying. It really does not change much for my taste.
Over all great work on the vocals, there were some very interesting techniques being used on them here. The Bassline through out the track changed little but had a deep forward melodic movement. As for the main melody that it is cool for the first minute or two and gets boring quick. |
