I had a LaCie drive but had an issue with it being recognized by my MacBook Pro. Apparently a lot of other users do too... You would plug the drive to your laptop, turn on the laptop (and have the drive set to auto-detect on) and the drive would never boot up. There "work-around" on LaCie's website is to run Disk Utility and repair permissions, shut down and remove you battery for 15 min, replace battery, reconenct HDD, and power on. Hardly a "solution."

Anyway, I've since moved on to G-Tech's G-Drive and love it (it's only been 1 week though). No fan, so it's quiet, and uses a high-quality Hitachi HDD. You pay the price though... about $300 for a 500GB model.

If you do a little shopping around, you will find many RAID USB enclosures that dont cost a lot. Check out newegg. You can also buy USB to SATA adapter board that has RAID controller on it for under $100. This way you can make your own external RAID storage for same price than regular external Lacie or WD. Laptop hard drives are still not large enough to hold an extensive music collection that many mobile DJ's have. Every mobile jock i've seen or known, uses one of the cheap, consumer USB drives. I've witnessed one fail during a set. Also, almost all consumer USB hard drives do not have sufficient cooling, which may be causing drive failure. Unfrtunately, it seems that the only way to get a well cooled and reliable external storage for mobile DJing is to build one yourself.

who makes the hard drives for lacie? i doubt they make them themselves as they only make external drives. and i think i remember reading somewhere years ago that they had western digital drives in them, but it could be that i'm wrong or that they've changed manufacturers.
i'm interested in buying a external hdd for my laptop (when i get it about a year from now :p) and i'd like to get one with a fingerprint reader and i haven't see any other brands offer one except lacie.
anyway any other internal hdd than western digital would have to be pretty ing convincing for me to buy it. i've had so many bad experiences with other brands and none with western digital. and they're ing silent compared to like maxtor for example.

Even if it is Western Digital in Lacie drives. I guess it's the interface in between the harddrive and pc (for the communication) causing the problems. Another HDD wouldn't fix that I'm afraid :(.

Maybe later I'll get an external drive for backup purposes, but probably a network harddrive would be easier in these kinds of cases. I'm not planning on working with an external hdd with mp3s for a while ;).

You could consider buying a box seperately and then install the harddisk of your own choice in it. Probably a bit more expensive though so I don't know. Just compare a bit of prices, try to take something from the mid/high-price range to avoid low-quality stuff could help :).

dunno what problems you're referring to. but i most likely won't be getting a mac and that's the only problem i've heard about the lacie drives, so if it only concerns macs, i don't have to worry about it.
also for djing with serato/torq/traktor scratch i really don't see any better solution than an external hdd.

I was referring to the problems Keith posted earlier. Forgot about the mac/pc thing there for a sec :).

I never commented about external cd being bad, it's just not of interest for me right now;). Sorry for the useless advice, just felt the urge to post hahaha. Cheers!

oh, ok. my post wasn't directed at keithos27's post in any way though. i was just separately thinking about getting a lacie drive and wondering what's inside as western digital hdds are the best i've encountered so far.
Vero
get a lacie D2 or big disk. triple interface (usb, firewire 400 and 800). the d2 and bigdisks use a striped RAID1 config for optimum performance.

to be completely honest i am not sure... at first i thought mine was defective, but for the problem to be mentioned in their FAQ i think it's more of an issue than just my particular drive... :(

i still don't know what brand of HDD is in there either... i know the g-tech g-drive uses a hitachi, though.
