I haven't ever really had much to contribute but here are a few things that have helped me on my musical journey. ;)
The Circle of Fifths << A circle that indicates the relations between chords & scales. Very helpful for basic chord progression etc etc.
Piano Room << A handy tool for learning different chords and scales.
Computer Music Tutorials << These where posted up here recently but just in case anyone missed it. Very handy guides for structure and development of your musical ideas.
[A Few Things]
-Don't expect to get the sound you want straight out of the synth. Remember effects and processing!
-Unless you are trying to start a collection, don't buy new toys unless you know your current ones inside out.
-If you have tweaked your synth and made an awesome sound but it just doesn't fit with the rest of your synths don't throw it away, make a new segment in your track and take out some other elements to allow it to fit.
-Take short breaks and listen to other music when you are producing for a long time because your ears will grow accustomed to your sound making any mistakes or possibly bad notes sound ok.
-Drawing notes solid 16ths can sound a tad bland. Play around with your sequencers swing to help give it some life.
-Scott Adams once said: "Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep."
It is all pretty simple stuff but I feel like I need to contribute something since all I have ever done is sponge. |

Hey, good advice man. I'm just curious, when you mention swing, what exactly does it do? I noticed it in Ableton Live working with the arpeggiator device. |

Swing alters the timing of MIDI notes by moving them back or forward a bit, so it gives a more "human-like" feel to your pattern. |

Swing can add some good character to a track. Try it on a moving bassline or a 1/16th note arpeggiated synth. Don't overuse it in a track though, or it might end up sounding like mush.
Phantom Limb: set up an arpeggiated synth with a 4/4 kick and some steady bassline. Set the arp. to Swing 16, played with some chord, then up the global swing effect value (upper left of live), maybe around 30 or so. Experiment with that. |

Thank you for the advice. I'm currently getting a bit discouraged. Thanks again for the pick me up. |

I know the feeling all to well.
But it is worth it for the feeling you get when you recover from a down period. Just stay dedicated and you will do fine. |
