Improving performance in FL studio?

I've tried maxing out the hardware buffer all the way to the right and ticking loads of boxes but it seems that nothing I try will work. My sound is kind of grainy and distorted, like there is no CPU being spared when I know there is plenty. I have 512mb ram and have never had any problem like this before.
Has anyone got any ideas to help me improve the quality in FL? |

| Choose 'smart disable for all plugins' in the options. Choose multithread processing if your comp supports it too |

Update your soundcard drivers, DirectX, I assume you are using ASIO4ALL, if not, you should ;).
