Improving performance in FL studio?

I've tried maxing out the hardware buffer all the way to the right and ticking loads of boxes but it seems that nothing I try will work. My sound is kind of grainy and distorted, like there is no CPU being spared when I know there is plenty. I have 512mb ram and have never had any problem like this before.

Has anyone got any ideas to help me improve the quality in FL?

Choose 'smart disable for all plugins' in the options. Choose multithread processing if your comp supports it too

Update your soundcard drivers, DirectX, I assume you are using ASIO4ALL, if not, you should ;).

You might also consider bouncing tracks to wave and not including so many elements in your tracks.
