(i wanted the AMD but it cost too much more...)

I run Photoshop, Frontpage, VideoWave (video editor), WHILE burning a CD with easy cd creator... and i watch DVD's on this thing.

a celeron can do pretty much anything you need to throw at it... and the duron is slightly better than the celeron.

so what i'm saying is, if you find an athlon or pentium for the same price, great, go for it... but you don't have to pay more... you don't always have to have the newest and the best of everything. sometimes what you need will do.

Its not a matter of whether or not it can do what you want... certainly you dont need all 1.76gHZ to burn a cd, run photoshop, and make a webpage, but the faster clock speeds up long processes and things that are extremely high in CPU usage. Those 3 programs are not a huge burden on your CPU.

Its true, the duron processor is only 66% as fast, but unless you really are a bitch about performance and speed (like me,) you wont notice the difference unless you do TONS of things at once. Robby, your celeron will handle those 3 progs easily, but a p4 2.4 or XP 2100+ will run them much faster and it would be noticeable.

The real question you have to ask yourself, coup, is if you think that you are going to be annoyed by a small difference in speed... Thats all it really comes down to. The Celeron and Duron are both fine processors, just toned down to attract a more mainstream consumer.

cheers

of course i don't prefer celeron to athlon... for starters thats like comparing civics to mercedes! secondly, as i had stated i didn't want to spend an extra 400 bucks to get the AMD when the celeron would suit my purposes just fine. sure, if i had the extra money lying around i would, but i prefer to buy vinyls :)

on your current wages would you buy a mercedes if you lived a mile from your work? probably not... if anything, you'd buy a civic. ;)

I used to run a PII 350 64RAM with Win 2k Pro on, so i already used to slow speeds! haha! seriously, im not after a machine that'll blow up its so powerful, im gona get some quotes for Pentium 4 chips today aswel! all i want a new cpu is to run photo shops, standard windows apps, but its more for games, new first person shooter games for example are abit more advanced than the PII, so..?
CLuver?
I have a 1.2ghz AMD athlon [t-bird]. The Athlon is the power-user chip from AMD, and the Duron is the budget chip. Apparently the 1.2ghz AMD athlon equates more to a P4 1.4ghz, with the Duron chips being better compared with Intel's budget chip, the Celeron. I would guess that the AMD Duron 1.0ghz would equate to a Celeron 1.1-1.4ghz. Also remember that the different CPUs are better at certain stuff. I think the P4 can out perform the AMD Athlon in some areas like 3D gaming, but the Althon is better at applications like photoshop and other editor type stuff. I'm not sure.

Coup - get some quotes for a PIV, but they aint cheap, and the one u want if ur gonna get one is the "northwood" and the 1.6Ghz (slowest northwood I think) retails @ £130 ish (the 2.2Ghz is about £400 :eyes: ) .... The Duron and the Elite mobo is my reccomendation for budget value :D and it should easily run anything u want. With the cash saved u can get urself a decent gfx card m8.

i went to another place today, and basically there has been a change in the way we're gona upgrade, and prob better all around.

We're gona upgrade simular to what smellsexcellent said, we're going to buy all the components from places like pricewatch.com or uk alternatives, this way i get the best on the market, for cheeper price. my brother says he can install it all, as hes done computer courses at college.

So basically, i need to purchase a new mobo, cpu, fan/transformer, possiably case. (apparntly cpu's and fan/transformers come together?)

Is that all i need for what im going to do? i need help with the mobo, i no you've said some before, but the only thing the mobo has to be is SDRAM and DDR ram compatable, slots for both, coz if DDR ram comes needable in the future, i dont wana have to buy another new mobo. PCI slots needed aswel, one for sound card, one for graphics card, and few spare, no 56k modem will be in there tho. and apart from that just a stable one. CPU will either be an AMD Duron or Pentium 4, looks Pentium 4 tho.

Would like help with the case aswel, like nice ones that fill fit the size of the new mobo, and decent looking ones, not flat "hit by a bus" looking ones. Needs to have slots for a ROM and a writer.

Cheers for all the help, ill start shopping later, help on this would be apprechieted (can never spell that f**king word :p )
sothis
get an athlon instead of a p4

Whether you get Athlon or P4 is up to you.. I prefer Athlon B/C ive never had problems whereas ive had some with the intel processors.

What you DO NOT wanna up is the case you get. Make sure you get a WELLMADE case from someone like Antec or Lian Li.. Antec cases are really nice, not expensive, and very spacius and open. The idea is to get a very sturdy case that allows for proper airflow so you dont blow any components. On a faster system you will need more than just one case fan and amany cases just dont cut it. So look out in that aspect, otherwise, the skys the limit!

good luck!

no, im saying when youre ready, you wont have to....

oh wait, thats in a movie.. :D

What i really meant to say was that a case is a very important part of a computer. Just look into an Antec case.. theyre inexpensive, quality cases. You will want 2 fans just because... im will have 4 case fans not including my heatsink.. (!)

its just a matter of keeping your stuff cool, the cooler the better... and no one wants to have a processor blow b/c you didnt spend an extra 5 bucks on another fan.... just a suggestion, but it really is a serious issue.
