I bought a new laptop and of course the only OS they offer on these newer laptops, is Window Vista. I like it as a web browsing OS, but XP was so much better and didn't hog any ram. I don't have a copy of XP though so I will probably just format this laptop to get all the dell bloatware off of it, then reinstall vista.
Even when I run FL studio 6 my vista interface(the new theme) interferes with the FL interface. It tries to put the vista border around the piano roll, playlist, etc.
Does anyone else have these problems? Or is it just me? |

Dude, you should do a search for vista related problems.
Bascially, Vista does not work yet for the concerns of DAW's - Most soundcards to not have the necessary driver support and most software is ready either.
Get a copy of XP then think about Vista in about a years time, when they have fixed all the compatibility issues. |

| I've learned that some of the new laptops which come with Vista preinstalled won't work properly with XP because the manufacturers refuse to make drivers for XP. If you got one of the cheap-ass Compaq or Dell laptops, good luck. |

yes ableton works...but latencies at least at mine were horrible when compared to XP...
well
Vista - Ableton latecny (for DJing) was like 400msec...with all my FX Running
in XP it's like 10...sometimes I pull it to 13 to make sure ...
tested with sigmatel HD audio soundcard...
I was pretty nicely surprised about the latencies in XP though! :) |

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520, they have XP drivers available for my laptop in the support/download section, some people are having problems with them but I'm sure if they put them up, then they will fix them. I just need to obtain a copy of XP somehow.
Vista is cool and all, I just don't think its needed yet. |

Yea it's a bit too early. My upgrade CDs are sitting next to me but I'm not using them any time soon. Luckily bought my laptop at the beginning of the year.
I think if you ask nicely enough they may let you get an XP copy on a new laptop. Dell does it, you will just have to call them and see if they will do it for you ;) |

| I just custom built a new PC and I am using Vista with Cubase SX3 and a bunch of VST's. My sound card is an E-mu 1212M. No issues at all. |
