converting 16 bit to 24 bit question

| I have some samples I recorded awhile back at 16 bit 44.1. It's a lot easier to just convert them in Sound Forge to 24 bit 88.2 than re-recording them all, but will I end up with the same sound as I would have if I recorded them in 24 bit 88.2 in the first place? Going to be a bigger pain to rerecord them all, but want to be sure I don't lose anything by converting them. Thx. |

| I don't think you'll lose anything but it won't be any better either. Why do you want to do that anyway? |

ever tried making a 128 mp3 into a 320? it just tripled in size but sounds EXACTLY the same?
either re-record them higher or leave it. i'm curious what you're recording though where you think 24bit is essential. |

| I'm not positive that it is. They are acoustic guitar clips I recorded. I may just leave them if not essential. Thx. |

ooooouuu, you're going to get some mixed reactions about acoustic guitars.
for 1, they take up a lot of a frequency spectrum so higher bit rate will actually help, 2nd i'm guessing where you're recording isn't the nicest booth in the world so you'll probably need to add a desser and other 'get that crap noise out of my recording' plugs. as you start to add those plugs you're slowly creeping on your sound quaility, again another reason to start higher... |

| Gotcha, thx. We were recording in a good area so the recording itself souds fine. But I was afraid that the acoustic clips would need to be re-recorded. Have some others (synths primarily) but by the sounds of them so far I'm not noticing much difference. Appreciate the help. |

Just converting a sound file to higher bit resolution will make no difference to the sound (except from making the file larger). Compare converting a 16 color photo to a 256 color photo doesn't add color depth, but if shot in 256 color from the beginning, it makes sense. Same with sound.

Perfect. Exactly what I needed to know.
Thanks all for the input. |
