1212M audio output... y splitter or headphone amp?

The 1212M audio output consists of two mono 1/4" TRS connections... the manual states that these outputs aren't designed to handle headphone output (beyond the fact that they are in mono... the current drive isn't appropriate), and recommends going to a mixer, or for my purposes a headphone amp.
That said, there are Y-cables... and having plugged my headphones directly into one of the mono connections, I had no problems. I can get one for around $10... but I'm concerned about damaging the card if its not designed for that...

The only reason you need a headphone amp is if you're not getting enough gain through those outs. |

It won't damage the soundcard. I actually did the same some years ago. I made a 2x mono TRS to female (stereo) mini jack so I could connect my headphones directly to the to the soundcard output :). |

thanks guys... i went ahead and just bought a y-cable...
dont understand why so many people keep recommending headphone amps when this is such a simple and cheap solution... |

some headphones need a stronger signal than that :)
also, alot of people like to have more than one set of cans... like if youre recording a vocalist in the same room you obviously need two sets of headphones, yet theres only one plug. |

Hi, where can you get these certain Y-cables online? I want to do a similar thing with my audiophile 2496 and plug my headphones straight in without getting a mixer? Any suggestions? Thanks. |
