I would like to know if anyone could explain to me how a common element in trance music is constructed. I am a beginner producer, but I have searched the forums a great deal on this topic, but haven’t found anything. Maybe this is in part because I don’t know what this type of sound is called.

What I am looking to make is basically a crash that has a complex reverb or delay on it. I have made a very short clip of Joni – things I never tell you, which has a good example of what I am looking for. This crash seems to have a quick delay with little or no feedback to create a very quick slapback effect, but then has a more complex diffusion (maybe a filter delay) that repeats the sound every 2 subsequent beats but also filters out the sound so it decays completely after 16 beats. The sound is very rhythmic; it syncs to the beat perfectly.

I have tried extensively to create the effect in Albeton Live, but cant get it right. If anyone has some tips, or even better, could give a step-by-step on how to do this, or point me to such a guide, I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Here is the sample from the Joni track. It is a 14 second, 128kbps mp3 (about 250KB). The crash that I am trying to make starts milliseconds before beat 5, decays until just before beat 21 and then starts over immediately:

That sounds more like a clap than a crash, but anyway...

Just woke up so I'm still feeling a bit groggy but I think that's achieved by adding a delay to some reverb, so that instead of an immediate effect it comes a short time afterwards. Also sounds like the entire thing is also processed by a multi-tap or cross-delay.

ok pretty simple, just set up a sidechain or volume controller on the tail of the reverb or delay...duck the volume accordingly.

and then u get something like this:

i tried to exaggerate the effect...is that the type of sound you were going for? maybe i missed the mark...lol

Stereo delay. Nothing else; no delayed reverb or side chaining.
The sample has a slower attack on it than a normal clap.

Thanks very much for the responses. Can i use one of the delays in Ableton Live to do this, or should i get a VST delay plug-in? If Live's delays are sufficient, which one should i use (i.e. filter delay, simple delay etc)?

Thanks!

Add lots of reverb and sidechain ontop for a much cooler effect.

Classic Delay will do this sound with the "ping pong" preset. :)
Just make sure you push the attack forward a bit on the sample, or it will sound too hard.

I agree. It's just a delay on the beat with stereo offset and low attack. lol I just repeated echosystm. Oh well, can't say no one told you twice.
