If you can: watch the news reporting here about the Iraqi war etc. You will probably find it very different with the one you're used to.

Thanks a lot! I will take all of the above info into account :D . I'm definitely aware that American media is ... Well, I won't get into that, but back when I had cable tv I definitely did watch a lot of world news broadcasted by countries around the world; mainly British Broadcasting, as well as Japan and India's news channels. It's definitely a contrast between American world news. I'll be sure to catch it in Belgium. Speaking of which, if I were to book a hotel in central Ghent, would that be very far away from I <3 T ?

Also, are there any good sites, other than this one, where I can get info on events taking place during the week? (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday, Monday). Is there anything I shouldn't miss while I'm in town?

I know the trip hop group, Hooverphonic, is from Belgium and they have a new album coming out soon. I'd love to catch them if they happened to be playing.:tongue2

No concerts planned around that time, I'm afraid.

As for accommodation, there's a Holiday Inn right next to the event hall. But you're right, if you're staying for five days you'll be better off in the centre. Public transportation will get you to Flanders Expo in no time anyway.

Not sure which type of events you're after, but there's always http://www.partyguide.be

Also - you might want to visit Antwerp, Bruges or Brussels while you're in Belgium because there's no way you can fill 5 days in Ghent alone :p

Thanks a lot. I will definitely check out the cities around Ghent. :)

I am looking to find out of there's a good scene on weeknights? Over here during the week there are usually a lot of rock and electro acts, as well as techno and tech-house sets at smaller, local clubs. Some people who usually do shows on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday are:

Boys Noize
Para One
Trentm0ller
Loco Dice
Adultnapper
Audion
M.A.N.D.Y.
Gui Boratto
Ed Banger Rec DJ's (Justice, Kavinsky, Busy P, SebastiAn, Mehdi etc)
Soulwax
Claude Von Stroke
Fedde Le Grand
Klaxons
Bloc Party
Riot In Belgium
CSS
... and tons of local DJs and bands.

How's the scene during the week over there? What time do things usually close?

Theres one infamous street called 'overpoortstraat' that is always packed with students going out. Its just one pub afteranother and they are open till like .. well 7 8 'o clock... so no worries

Thats if you just want to get drunk and dont mind the crappy music:D

Although i have to mention Decadance over there which plays techno and prog, and prolly electro etc... No trance though. Tonight for instance, Eelke Kleijn is coming.

Other recommendations: Club Tijuana and the loungebar limonada, whichare very close one to another, near the "Korenmarkt".

About how cold will it be by November? :nervous:

Brussels may be more expensive than New York. In my experience (having lived in New York and having family in Brussels), it was about the same. The exchange rate is now 1.39 which means Brussels is probably considerably more expensive.

From JFK, you can easily find a flight to Brussels. If you have never been to Europe, I recommend flying to Paris or Amsterdam and taking the train to Belgium. That way you can visit more places. Though if you want to keep it simple, you can easily occupy yourself for a week in Belgium.

The weather in November is not that different than in New York. It may be a bit milder.

One can never predict in this global warming era, but in that time of the year it normally won't be freezing yet, not even at night. It will most likely be quite rainy and windy though, so I'd make sure to pack a good coat. But you won't be needing snowboots and gloves ;)

Approximately around 59° F, probably even below 59°. In general November is very rainy and windy

I initially wanted to do something like that. I would have preferred to fly into Berlin and stay for a bit, then take a train into Belgium. I suppose I still could. I haven't booked my flights yet .. .. but to be honest, with this being my first time outside of the US/Canad, I'm pretty nervous about hopping from place to place without any problems :nervous:. Hmm, just looked at flight prices. It's about the same price flying into Brussels and flying into Berlin. Maybe I'll reconsider my options .. :) .

Thanks all :tongue2

you shouldn't be too worried about hoping around from place to place. i took trains from austria to brussels two years ago the day after it snowed 3 feet overnight and we got there on time with no issues. and i don't speak any german. it's super easy to get around in europe.

All right. I'll most likely be booking my flights sometime next week. I'm going to shoot for flying into Berlin, then taking a train into Brussels. Anyone know how much that will cost me, and also how long the train ride is?? I figure I'll leave Berlin on Saturday (10 Nov), check into a hotel in Ghent, then head over to ILT unless there's some time to spare..
