Classical/Romantic Period Music

I've browsed through the classical section of a couple stores now and it seems there are an endless selection of compilation CD's and box sets... some specific to a certain artist, to a certain style, or just an eclectic selection of everything.
I was hoping someone could suggest a specific compilation that I ought to get. I just want to make one purchase... preferably a compilation of some of the best works from the classical and romantic period (1700's through the 1800's). I'd prefer a variety of the best artists so as not to get stuck with only one interpretation.

there are bunch of compilations with various composers. just dig through Amazon or something :-)
And keep an eye out for these ones:

He's only looking for Classical and Romantic composers, unless the "classical" is supposed to be lowercase, in which case the Romantic is redundant.
That said, those guys are all ones to keep an eye on, although frankly, I'm not a big fan of the Baroques like Bach, unless they're wigging out on organs.
You can also look into impressionist composers like Claude Debussey. |

| there was a classical midi site i used to browse on...100,000+ pieces to browse through, found the ones i really liked and bought the cd's. it's also a good way to find some of the lesser known composers...i forget the link, but search classical midi on yahoo and it's prolly the first site |

Thanks for the replies, I was hoping for some more specific recommendations of song compilations I should be looking for... I'll keep an eye out for the title inconspicuous mentioned :)
And yes I am looking for captitol C Classical and Romantic era music... I'm not as interested in Baroque or Impressionist, though I won't complain if that is a part of any compilation.
I guess I could just grab anything... but I want to make sure to get one with the "best" selection and performed by the "best" orchestra. Maybe it doesn't matter. |

The Romantic era generally spans the early-mid 19th century to the early 1900s. I'd highly recommend you listen to various 'Nocturnes,' which are by and large piano compositions and are part and parcel of the Romantic style. Similarly, German Lieder was at the height of Romanticism as well. Check out the various Nocturnes, Lieds, Symphonys, Sonatas, and Edutes from the following:

Franz Schubert
Gustav Mahler
Johannes Brahms
Hector Berlioz (Symphonie Fantastique)
Robert Schumann (also his wife Clara Schumann, especially her work for violin and piano)
Chopin (find his Nocturnes recorded by Vladimir Horowitz, also the latter's piano works of Scriabin, Scarlatti, Liszt, et al.)

Dvorak; Debussy

| What i many times have wondered about is: if i set out to get some music written by a certain composer, what recordings/orchestras/conductors are considered good? I guess that is an important subject in classical circles. |

The trouble is there's a million billion compilations, performances and box-sets of every symphony, composer and movement you could name. |

It's highly subjective, changes every few years, and while there are some trends, it's different with each piece. I have a few favorites, but someone else can probably give you a more comprehensive list. |
