Partially unrelated side note: though I'm not a huge Red Hot Chili Peppers fan, check out Aeroplane for awesome bass guitar work. :) |

I have no clue if this qualifies, but I have a friend who used to swear by Queens of the Stone Age. I tried to listen, but me running I just could not listen to that stuff.
Someone tell me if QOTSA qualifies. |

they're good, but totally power-chord or similar. they use subtle changes in the chord progression as opposed to an actual riff more often than not. it works but i'm just looking for more stuff |

| Okay, I wasn't sure. I still can't listen to them. Maybe I'm just old and set in my ways. I'm pretty sure my friend got laid as a result, though, that sneaky bastard. |

Did you listen to any of the bands suggested yet? what'd you think? |

progression > riffs, imo. then again, I don't play guitar, so it's a different perspective. |

Less Than Jake - they're ok and do a lot of good covers, but aren't amazing, and definitely not what i'm looking for here.
Nirvana - not a big fan, but it's not what I'm looking for at all here.

chord progression is essential everywhere but there has to be something else. While I have more than enough songs that are similar, there's a lot that I want from music that I'm unsure of who can put me in that direction. I'll find some good riffs tomorrow as I have a very early night tonight to do. |

yes, there's progression, but there's a big difference between, to use previous examples, Nirvana & Opeth. I'm more interested in the composition than the performance, I guess. |
