wow pvd's style is alot different with ableton.... looping and weaving in and out of songs real fast :eyes:
at end when born slippy is looped in then white stripes... :eyes: |

as for standout tracks, i really liked 'far away'.. MUCH better than the other giuseppe collaboration on the album. onova - platitude, was another lovely melodic trancer that i remember.. quite ASOTesque but with a really strong theme that made it stand out for me. there were other less melodic ones i remember liking but i can't recall them at the minute, i'll have to listen again at another point.
anthem aside there was another horrid male-vocal track just past the hour mark that made me cringe |
That's pretty close to my opinion of the set.
I think every single one of his new vocal tracks is awful. The vocals are uniformly shallow and flat, which would kill the productions even if the music wasn't so uninspired. The Riddle was the last good vocal track Paul van Dyk produced, thanks in part to St. Etienne. Only some of his instrumentals have a shred of dignity left. Far Away is actually decent; it reminds me of his 2002 style, and would have fit seamlessly into the Amnesia set.
On balance, this set isn't a patch on what he used to play in 2002 and earlier. So depressing: all we can listen to these days is trance or boring minimal. |

On another note, to give you something good to listen to, which I think is an example of classic PVD sound of the pre-2002 era - I've posted Paul's 2 hour Essential Mix set from Home in London on 4.23.2000 - This set really embodies the PVD sound of this era and is a good example of a set he did on 100% vinyl, pre CDJ or Ableton...the set has the whole pounding epic euro-trance sound w/a bit of techno/driving hard tunes of the times. The set is definately a classic, and well worth the listen. Give it a listen, let me and others know what you think:

The Home set is hopped up, that's for sure, but I always preferred Homelands, Mayday, and Innercity out of his 2000 sets.
Regarding vinyl, Paul van Dyk is one of many DJs who went downhill with digital. It's clear that the intuitive sense memory tied to a physical record, once so important to the emotional quality and continuity of a set, has been lost in translation. |

| BTW, in that Global Gathering set, there are 3 tracks with male vocals: Talk in Grey (new track on 'n Between'), Schiller feat Peter Heppener - "I feel you" (this is an older track), and then the anthem track that everybody seems to hate (last track) - I heard 'Anthem' for the first time on the BBC show that Paul hosted a few weeks back, I particularly like the track, and don't think it's too played out (yet, lol)...hahaha - it's uplifting and still has the summer vibe, but if this becomes another "Born Slippy" or "For an Angel (remix #39)" or "Nothing but you" - yeah I can see that happening. |

there was a track before "for an angel" that preceeded "anthem" called "another sunday" which has a male vocal and will be on the new album. i quite like it though i can see it being one of those tracks i get tired of quick. |

Oh yeah, there is another one - are you talking about the one that sings "this overflow starts to destruct, trying to smash the stained glass windows of this world" "it blows my mind" ?? PVD has been blasting this tune for over a year now, yeah this is getting old/way overplayed by now - I didn't know it was a PVD produced tune...I don't really like it. Although I thought this was some White Stripes remix or something. Hmmmm |

PvD only plays the vocals of "Probspot - Blow Your Mind" over his own track "Another Sunday" its called ABLETON LIVE :p
BTW hes been playin that in "Anthem" track for a good 8 months, that lost its appeal the first time i heard it! |

yeah its getting released on his album as "paul van dyk ft probspot - another sunday" according to the "in between" tracklist.
as for anthem, im pretty indifferent towards it. i neither like it or hate it, besides... i was on my way out of the tent and off to see steve lawler when that came on after "for an angel".
i guess its a crowd pleaser and thats why he plays it. it wont win any awards for creativity but if you were there and in that tent then you would see that 15,000 people were going nuts and having a good time rather than being critical over track selection and quality. the vast majority of people in the godskitchen tent wanted to be entertained not educated and pvd gave them what they wanted, thats the way it is and why he plays it. |
