Once and for all- How many genres of Trance ARE there?

This thread is meant to put an end to a life-long debate. I'm not obsessed about classification, but certain trance tracks are so distinctly different that they must deserve some mention.
I know different people will ultimately have different ways of grouping them together, and many will say that the boundaries are increasingly blurring to such an extent that classification will no longer make sense, but surely there MUST still be some sort of differentiation.
Personally, I think that 3 main classifications will suffice, and it will be relatively difficult to cross these 3 borders, whichever way you look at it.
One, epic (or some may choose to call it anthem) trance- a classic example would be Push- Tranzy State of Mind (Club Mix).
Two, prog trance. Natious- Amber and Bullit- Cried to Dream (Max Graham remake) come to mind. Things are a little slower here, and the buildups are a lot more lengthy.
Three, hard trance. The best example would be Utah Saints- Lost Vagueness (Oliver Lieb Mix). Hard, banging, but with enough riffs and elements of trance to make an impact.
What do you guys think? Any volunteers to revoke my claim? |

Don't forget Acid Trance, Hardfloor, Omega Force etc, and what about Tribal Trance? Marco V - Magnitude, all heavy tribal beats with the odd trance synth thrown in. Then there's Psy Trance or Goa Trance, Pledians, MWNN, Dragonfly, Flying Rhino.
One style that's thrown me is Art Of Trance, it's not really euphoric or uplifting or Euro, neither is it progressive or vocal or acid, it's just 'Trance' really! |
